Ending the siege of Mantua involved abandoning 179 cannons and mortars that couldn't be removed, as well as dumping their ammunition in the lakes. Although it pained Napoleon to do so, he believed that decisive victories on the battlefield were more important than fortresses in modern warfare. He was determined to achieve a swift victory and told Masséna, "Whatever happens, and however much it costs, we must sleep in Brescia tomorrow."

On the 31st of July, the French army marched westward at 3 a.m., and a fierce battle ensued at dawn for the town of Lonato between General Sauret and Austrian General Ott. The fighting lasted for four hours, and despite being heavily outnumbered, Ott eventually fell back. With the arrival of General Augereau's forces, the 18,000 men under Quasdanovich faced a French army of 30,000. Realizing the unfavorable odds, Quasdanovich promptly retreated.

Concerned about the security of his lines of communication, Napoleon marched with Augereau to Brescia that night, reaching the city by the next morning.
