In late July, Napoleon received intelligence from a paid informer about General Wurmser's movements. Wurmser was leading his army, which now included experienced veteran units from the Rhine campaign, to relieve the garrison in Mantua. Napoleon placed great importance on gathering intelligence and personally analyzed the information instead of relying on staff officers. He employed various methods to gather intelligence, such as interrogating deserters and prisoners, sending out cavalry patrols, and disguising soldiers as farm laborers to extract information from locals.

The spies' information proved to be accurate, as Wurmser was advancing with 32,000 men on the eastern side of Lake Garda, while General Quasdanovich was approaching with 18,000 men on the western side. Napoleon left General Sérurier with a portion of the army to maintain the siege of Mantua, while he gathered 31,000 men to counter the new threats. He distributed his forces strategically, deploying different generals and divisions to various locations to slow down and engage the enemy.
