Okay, I know they’re not the most amazing games in the world. But I’m one of the people who actually enjoy the Dark Pictures games.. I think that, for what they are, they’re pretty good.
But the most recent game, The Devil in Me, just does so many things wrong.
There are new traversal mechanics, and they work well enough. But the game acts like it's something seriously new and revolutionary.
I hope you think climbing is scary, because the majority of the first hour of this “horror” game is just spent scurrying up ledges… in full daylight.
Also added is a simple inventory system. The coolest thing about it is that each of the five characters holds a unique item, related to their job, that can help them solve puzzles or survive, in some way.
One problem… the game almost never asks you to actually use these tools. It's like the mechanic never really progressed past the “idea stage” during development, but they shoehorned it in anyhow.
As concepts, I honestly don't have a problem with any of the new features. I just wish they were implemented in a way that didn’t come across as shallow and meaningless.
Ultimately, they end up severely scarring what could have been at least an okay game in the series.
