Do you remember “The Crimson Room”? In the mid-2000’s, this hugely popular internet game was many people’s first experience with the idea of an “escape room”?

Eventually, the concept left the virtual realm and became real-life attractions where you discover clues and solve puzzles in order to try and escape.

Now, things have come full-circle with Escape Academy: a game that aims to take the lessons learned from real-life escape rooms and apply them back to a video game in an attempt to create the ultimate escape room experience.

Escape Academy might be the best escape room game I’ve played, but I finished the game with the feeling that the genre hasn’t reached its peak.

The puzzles were top-notch, but the vibe was a little too “cheerful” for me.

The Crimson Room prompted an overwhelming sense of “desperate exploration” that’s missing in Escape Academy.

The artstyle also just didn’t click with me.

My wife and I played this together, and we loved that the game had co-op play, but this mode was buggy for us. Sometimes one of our characters just wouldn’t control correctly and button presses wouldn’t be recognized.

However, If you're a fan of escape rooms or just even just puzzles, you’ll likely really enjoy Escape Academy.
