“Are video games art?” Is a question that comes up from time to time.

To many, it’s a strange question to ask. Because virtually every element of a video game (character models, music, performances, environments), they're all obviously art.

But some games go above and beyond and really channel the “games as art” mentality.

2016’s “Inside”, is one of those games.

In terms of genre, it’s a puzzle-platformer. The puzzles are interesting, but none will have you scratching your head for too long. And the platforming is decent, but nothing to write home about.

Inside may not have bold, groundbreaking gameplay, but the rest of the experience is masterfully presented.

Set in an extremely bleak world, the game tells a complex, mind-bending story without a single word of dialogue.

It’s a visual narrative where beautiful, yet strange, environments evoke questions. While the actions of nameless, faceless characters gradually provide the answers.

The eccentricity of Inside won’t appeal to everyone (or maybe even most). But I suppose that's the price it pays for so blatantly defying the status quo.
