New Dwarf Planet Discovered in the Solar System 2017 OF201
2017 OF201 is a recently discovered trans-Neptunian object that can be classified as a dwarf planet. It has an estimated diameter of 700 km, making it the second largest known object in such a distant orbit from the Sun, behind only Pluto. Its extreme orbit takes approximately 25,000 years to complete.
This celestial body is located about 90.5 astronomical units (AU) from the Sun, or 90 times the distance between the Earth and the Sun. Its discovery suggests that the region beyond Neptune may contain many other similar objects, challenging theories about the presence of a possible Planet 9.
2017 OF201 was officially announced as part of the Solar System on May 21, 2025 by the International Astronomical Union. However, its identification occurred over several years, with observations recorded between 2011 and 2018 by telescopes such as the Dark Energy Camera Legacy Survey (DECaLS) and the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT)
