What's old is new again with the Jaleco Brawlers pack, a partnership between Jaleco and Retro-bit. This cartridge includes 4 games from the Jaleco beat-em up lineup, some of which by themselves are insanely expensive. For $35 you get quite a value!

I hadn't played any of these titles before so for me this was a completely new experience on all 4 fronts. I started with Brawl Brothers, and man from the get go it was a great experience. Sure, if felt like it had been inspired by Final Fight but it had some great and unique aspects, from the character selections to the attacks. The music was really good and the game was just stupid fun. I loved the attack where you could grab and flip someone over your head.

Rival Turf felt like more of the same, which was a great thing. Once again the attacks and character moves felt really fluid and positive and the hit detection was pretty good too. The weird thing about this game was the animation when your character ran. It just was... weird. Shoulders back, head up, body moving forward at the hips. It's ok but it was a bit distracting during gameplay. I liked it and it was fun, again it left me wanting to play more.

Tuff E Nuff is a rather odd entry into the collection, instead of the side-scrolling beat-em up that both Rival Turf and Brawl Brothers were this is more of a one-on-one fighter similar to Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat. The animation definitely was similar to the other games on the cart but the gameplay was, well, it was just ok. I felt that the game could have been sped up a bit, this isn't a bag on the cart as much as it is how the actual game was.

The Peace Keepers was interesting because, from the get-go the background music is not turned on. You have the option to have either BGS or BGM turned on. Why you wouldn't have the background music turned out straight-away I just didn't understand. The enemies themselves didn't seem like they were varied much, at least in my experiences. Each character has a different set of strengths and weaknesses and you'll want to make sure you experiment with the different characters in different levels.

In the end this is a really neat compilation cart. I do wish that there was a way to get back to the game-select screen from within games so you don't need to hit the reset button to get to the main menu, that was a bit annoying.

Why it RoX:
- New SNES/SFC Games in 2018!
- Great value at only $35!
- Authentic replication of the original carts
- Great extras like buttons and Tuff E Nuff decal

What Could Be Improved
- The fit between the cartridge and cartridge cover could be a little better
- The Peace Keepers should have the BGM on by default
- Tuff E Nuff is not as good as the other titles on the cart

Should you buy one?
If you love Double Dragon and Final Fight there's enough here to more than hold your interest. I really like Brawl Brothers and Rival Turf, in my opinion these are the two strongest titles on this combo cart. For $35 there's enough content here to more than hold your interest.
