One amazing thing about the Nintendo Switch is just the ability to play great games anywhere. The removeable Joy-Cons make it possible for you to really enjoy console-quality gaming on the go. When you're at home, however, the stock Joy-Con grip is serviceable but really not great. Nintendo does offer the Pro Controller, their take on the XBox controller, and it's absolutely amazing. It's also $70. What is one to do if you just want a good gaming experience without breaking the bank? That's where the Retro Fighters Switch Combo Controller comes into play.

The Retro Fighters controller for the Switch is a little different in that it's a hardwired controller that attaches via Micro-USB cable to the Switch or Switch Dock itself. What you lose in wirelessness you gain in some extra coins in your pocket as you can buy two of these controllers for what one Nintendo Pro Controller would cost you.

The controller is a little plasticy feeling, nothing too terrible but it does not have the textured sort of feeling like the Pro Controller or the JoyCon grip has. I'm not saying it's bad, just...different. All of the buttons felt nice and responsive, all had a good placement and the gimbals under the analog sticks were smooth. So far color me impressed!

Connecting to the Switch itself was possible with the same USB-OTG cable I use for my Samsung Galaxy Note 8. It plugged right in and worked great from the get-go if I wanted to play on the Switch itself.

Connecting the USB cable to my Nyko dock was a little bit of a chore, mostly due to the lack of length on the USB cable. It's ok, I have a 10-foot extension cable I picked up years ago. Since the cable uses a regular Micro-USB port you can purchase longer ones if you need.

Playing games I was amazed that this controller had the gyro controls that the Pro Controller and JoyCons have, and not only does it have it but it's pretty darn responsive! It also has a good rumble too. Playing Mario Odyssey, Sonic Mania, Yooka Layee and others the Retro Fighters controller never let me down.

Why it RoX:
- Comfortable ergonomics
- Integrated Rumble and Gyro/Motion sensors
- Detachable Micro-USB cable
- Good value for the performance delivered
- Analog sticks feel pretty good

What could be improved:
- The included USB cable is WAAAAAAAAY too short
- Include a USB OTG Cable to facilitate playing on the Switch itself
- Plasticy feel and baby blue color may turn some off
- Slightly overpriced, should be $19.99-to-$24.99
- No Amiibo support

Should you buy one?
If you're considering this over a Pro controller I'd go with the Pro Controller, this is not the controller you're looking for. That being said if you're looking for a relatively inexpensive controller for taking with you on trips, a Player 2 controller or even 2 controllers for kids to use it's pretty good. I wouldn't dismiss it out-of-hand, that's for sure!
