Retro-bit is on a tear lately, from their RES+ 8-bit system, the Super Retro-Cade, even working with IREM, Data East and others to re-release some of the best classic games on cartridges again. Now they are at it again, updating their Super Retro Trio which is compatible with NES, Super NES, Super Famicom and Genesis games and adding in a new color (white instead of black), new OEM controllers and a new HDMI-supported output.

Looking at the box and the image of the back of the console I noticed the barrel-type connector for power. I was really hoping for Micro-USB but, thankfully, once I opened the box I was pleasantly greeted with a Micro-USB power cord. Thank you Retro-bit!!!

Other ports on the back of the console were the usual fare. HDMI and stereo AV outputs are there but I was confused by the apparent lack of an NTSC or PAL switch. Looking around to the front and the push-open door that switch an an abundance of controller ports were hidden here. Speaking of controller ports, oh my goodness does this have controller ports! Two each for the NES, Super NES/Super Famicom or Genesis/Mega Drive game systems. Yes, your old controllers will work with the Super Retro Trio+.

Two controllers are included with the system and they are virtually identical to the ones Retro-bit includes with the Super Retro-Cade and I really like at. I loved the way those controllers felt with the Super Retro-Cade and helps give the Super Retro Trio+ a bit of a unique identity. They do match the layout of the SNES/Super Famicom controllers, sorry Sega Fans.

The cartridge slots are all really nice, tight enough to provide confidence but they don't have a death grip on the games. NES and Genesis cartridges are a direct fit, as are SNES carts. Super Famicom games fit, however they're a bit more of a struggle to get everything lined up. I'm sure part of it was me not wanting to push to hard or break a new console but the opening was just a tick tight for SFC carts. Retro-bits own multi-carts, like the Joe & Mac Ultimate Caveman Collection was a direct fit. If anything it was easier to get these in than Super Famicom games!

Overall the Super Retro Trio+ appears to be a really well put-together system and I cannot wait to test it out. Stay tuned for our full review as we'll be putting it through its paces. There's also a shootout planned comparing this with the Hyperkin Supa Retron HD and the Gamerz Tek 16-bit HD!
