Alternative title: Is this th[I]ng still on?

Anyway, it's time for the mission to run protection for the missile supply run for an airship carrier, but I think we all know by this point that it's no simple supply run.

For Route B, we've had a few exclusive sidequests and some extra vignettes about the machines, but it's been mostly the same as Route A until now. Those last two words are important, because that's changing. After dealing with the massive machine (and learning that it's just a baby that was too strong for its own good), 2B and 9S are separated in a massive explosion. This time, we get to see what 9S was doing at that time.

Mainly, he found himself connected to the machine network, and since he had no control over his body, he decided to poke around. His investigation finds that the machines are keen on trying the arts and philosophy and models of governance. They're imitating humans, but more striking to him, they're not learning from their failures. If they form a dictatorship and it collapses, they just for another dictatorship exactly like the last one. If they farm and the crops fail, they just try again without changing a thing. It makes him believe that the failure *is* the goal.

He also finds himself having a chat with Adam. Adam claims he and Eve represent a new kind of life, which apparently touches a nerve for 9S. They're just machines, after all, right? But Adam claims that the androids are puppets with no will of their own, and that just pisses 9S off even more. Adam takes it back, and in fact, he thinks that he and 9S have a lot in common. He thinks 9S has this darkness inside him, a darkness that only grows, something that makes him hopeless, that makes him want to obtain and destroy everything, something that makes him want to **** 2B.

There aren't a whole lot of four-letter words that fit there, and it's probably supposed to be up to the player's interpretation, but I've heard the case that the missing word could be "kill." I still haven't remembered the argument, but the context is about how 9S has this destructive desire deep down inside him, so I think it's a good fit.

Anyway, 2B saves him and he's sent back to the Bunker to recuperate. As he does, he stumbles upon a port to the Bunker, and his curiosity gets the better of him. He digs around and finds some data. There's a bit of black box data here, a bit of shipping data there, and... Wait, those shipments are mostly empty? And here's some info on the whole YoRHa project, including... the creation of the Council of Humanity!? But it's supposed to be the other way around!

Before we can look any further, there's a request for backup from 2B, but the Bunker can't do anything because of the reception, so 9S decides hacking and controlling a machine to unlock doors is the way to go. Thus, we see the cult sequence from 9S's side (and skip the boss battle that 2B fought). When it's all over, the Commander wants to see 9S.

See, he didn't exactly cover his tracks when he hacked into the server, but he's not in trouble. In fact, the Commander has some info for him: humanity is extinct. In fact, they died before the alien invasion even began. She gives him a file with more details: YoRHa was created to raise android morale after humanity went extinct. The androids knew humanity was gone, so the creators of YoRHa spread rumors that some humans actually survived and escaped to the moon, and then they set up a communications server on the moon to send out periodic messages. After that, they started building the next generation of combat androids and called them YoRHa models, bringing things to where we are today.

Or, to use the Commander's words, it gave androids a god to fight for.

9S has a dilemma on his hands about what to do with this info, but things have gotten worse on Earth. Eve has gone berserk and 2B needs help. Finally we have our convergence as 2B and 9S reunite to kill Eve.

As the credits roll, we're brought back to 2B on the bunker, and told to pick up some items from 9S. Then, we have to go back to her quarters to confirm the delivery of some items. And then, a preview: things are going to escalate very soon.

And that's it for Route B! Next time, we'll get into route C/D, which... well, you'll see when we get there.
