Nier: Automata -- The E[N]d
So. We've seen all the other endings. It's time for Ending E: the [E]nd of YoRHa.
After redoing the final fight, this time as 9S opting to stay behind, the credits are once again interrupted by Pod 153 about to commence the data purge in accordance with the Project YoRHa plan. This time, we're gonna accept her request to check the noise. Pod 042 uses this time to decide that he doesn't want to delete all the data. After the six of them have interacted for so long, he wants 2B and 9S and A2 to survive. Wait, six? There are the three androids, the two Pods, and... one player, of course! So begins 042's bid, in defiance of YoRHa's protocols, to salvage the data instead.
So, the credits restart, and it's like hacking. You get a little retro-style ship to pilot around, and you have to shoot the credits, which are shooting orange and purple bullets back at you. Just like regular hacking, you die in three hits, and it'll get more challenging as it goes on. Good luck!
...Or maybe you don't need luck! If you have network features turned on, which you would, then every time you die, you'll get some messages. They'll probably be encouraging! The game will ask you in various ways if you want to give up, but keep trying! Eventually, the game will offer you a rescue, and six ships will start circling yours like Options in Gradius.
So now you're shooting seven times as many bullets, and every time you get hit, one of the other ships explodes, and you get a notice saying someone's data has been lost. It's basically impossible to lose, though you're going to see more data loss along the way. Eventually, the credits will end, and you will have beaten the game. The Pods gather things together to the bodies of 2B and 9S, and even A2 seems to be fine, even if they're all unconscious. Will everything turn out the same? Or will it be different? Who knows? But they'll get a chance to try.
But! It's not quite over yet. Pod 153 asks you, the player, if you want to send a message to those who are struggling like you just were. If you don't, that's it. If you do, you get to pick pieces of a message, just like your death message. That's why I said they're probably encouraging; there are some options that are very much not encouraging.
Then it's Pod 042's turn to ask you something. You suffered a lot to get to this point. Are you interested in helping the weak?
Will you give up your save data to do it?
Even if it helps someone you dislike?
Even though you worked so hard to unlock Debug Mode and Chapter Select?
Even if no one thanks you for it, or they think you're just doing it for show?
Are you sure?
If you say yes to all these questions, then that's exactly what happens. Pod will open the menu, and one by one, he deletes every last entry in every last panel in every last tab.
When it's all done, the Pods have their final words for you. "Thank you. Thank you for playing."
And I, in turn, thank you for watching.
