Alright, so, uh, the machines have managed to create something that looks... really human! We're just gonna put a pin in that, though, so we can do a couple of sidequests. The bigger one right now is, without a doubt, the one given by 16D to find a memento of her instructor 11B, who was shot down during the attack on the factory in the prologue.

It's the first one to have a little more meat to it than the super simple fetch quests earlier. We gotta hoof it back to the very beginning of the abandoned factory, where we fought that giant machine after the shmup section, to find 11B's body. Her black box was damaged beyond repair, but we managed to pull up fragments of her memories. They reveal that she was planning to fake being shot down as a cover for deserting, but she was damaged for real, lost all communications, and couldn't repair herself. We take her sword as the memento for 16D.

And when we get back to her, she offers to let us use 11B's weapon, since, well, 2B is also a battle unit and 16D is a defensive unit. That's how we get the YoRHa-issue Blade. We're also given a choice: either we can tell the truth about what 11B was doing, or we could conceal it. By revealing it, we learn that 16D always resented how strict and abusive 11B was, and the nature of her death brings her a twisted sort of delight. Fun fact: if you decide to hide the truth, you learn instead that they were in a relationship, and 16D plans to convert into a battle unit to avenge 11B. Put those two together, and... Either way, she decides she doesn't need to protect herself anymore.

Isn't helping people great?

Anyway! We got another urgent mission to track down some missing YoRHa units. The coordinates lead us to an amusement park that seems to have been taken over by machines, who... honestly, they just seem to be having a good time, so why ruin it? Except for that tank. That tank is pretty strong.

The signal leads to a theater, where a machine seems to be using the missing android bodies for... something. Decorations. It's a boss fight! This boss, whose name we can't understand, provides an introduction to the hacking mechanic, after a fashion. Right now, it's a purely defensive thing. It can lead to deleterious effects if we fail, so that's why I did my best to avoid it. The way my health bar did that overflow/wrap-around thing is, like, the early warning sign that something is wrong.

Anyway, after our victory, it turns out that there's nothing we can do for the missing androids. The machine was the only thing keeping them alive. We also get introduced to the idea of finding other players' bodies! (That's why it frequently connects to the network.) You can do a few things with them. The first is pray for them. The game says that praying for them will heal them, and there's no cost to it, so you might as well do it. The second thing you can do is retrieve their gear. The main thing that does is heal you, as well as give you three random temporary effects from their chip loadout. (If you ask me, the timer on those effects is way too short.) The last option is repairing the body. It'll turn into an extra follower in combat for a while. Neat!

Before we can make it back, though, we find a machine waving a white flag. They want to take us to a village full of peaceful machines. 9S thinks it's a trap, but it's probably worth gathering some info on them. There, we meet their leader, Pascal, who invites us to take a look around. As proof of the village's pacifism, he asks us to deliver a fuel filter to Anemone in the Resistance Camp.

When we do so, she admits that, yeah, she's been in contact with Pascal and his village for a while, and they regularly trade resources and equipment. She gives us some high viscosity oil to take back, and when we do, there's... an attack in the city! Oh no! We better hightail it back and pick up some flight units to take the big lad down.

It takes some effort, but destroying the giant Goliath-class machine leads to a massive explosion that leaves a massive crater. From the depths of the crater comes something most shocking: an alien signal! What's it doing underground? We'll find out!

Next time!
