Bravely Second Session 1: New Game, New Yew!
It's time... for the sequel!
I've mentioned it a few times, but I'll say it again anyway, just for good measure. When we in the West got Bravely Default, we actually got the second version of the game, known in Japan as "Bravely Default: For The Sequel." It was called that because they implemented a number of features that they had planned for, well, the sequel. And here it is!
I thought it would be nice to include the summary of the first game, too, so if you want to skip that, that's fine.
There's kind of a lot to cover plotwise, so I'm gonna take a crack at condensing it.
Eternia and the Crystal Orthodoxy are about to sign a peace treaty, when suddenly, a masked man named Kaiser Oblivion attacks. Templar Braev Lee and Dark Knight Alternis Dim of Eternia, and Pope Agnès Oblige and a young knight of the Crystalguard of the Orthodoxy, stand together to fight back, but to no avail. The Kaiser wipes them all out, cleaves Agnès's pendant in two, and kidnaps her.
A week later, the knight, Yew Geneolgia, wakes up with half of the pendant and sets out to rescue Agnès. He teams up with his comrades, Janne and Nikolai, to save her. Nikolai sent the remaining Crystalguard ahead, about 20 in all, and the plan is to meet up with them first. When they do, they're told some of them were injured and retreated back to town, so Nikolai goes back to take care of them.
Janne and Yew set up camp for the night, and Janne takes first watch to let Yew sleep. A noise wakes him up, though, and Yew investigates, only to find Janne is the sole survivor of the attack. It makes sense, because Janne carried out the attack. Turns out, he's been a spy this whole time, and he'll cut down anyone who stands in the Kaiser's way. Yew's prepared to stand his ground against Janne, but he can't win, and they both know it.
A voice from the pendant, Agnès herself, insists he run away, and so he does. He goes back to town to find Nikolai, but it turns out the Empire came back for another attack, wiping out all the injured and gravely wounding Nikolai. With his dying breath, he tells Yew to flee, to escape this pointless battle and live on.
But Yew doesn't. He's the protagonist, he's got a sworn duty to uphold. He strikes out on his own, the sole survivor of the Crystalguard, when suddenly he's attacked by a goth girl and her creepy doll. He can't even bring himself to act when suddenly a friend appears, Edea Lee! After fighting off the attacker, she explains that an astrologer told her about it and asked her to bring Yew to him.
They forge on to Eternia itself and talk to the astrologer. He says they're going to need help from Tiz, who's been asleep for two years. Eternia couldn't heal him, but this astrologer has something called a Soulstone that'll do the trick. They just have to put it in the chamber where he's resting.
So Yew and Edea press on. Soldiers guard one of the paths to Central Command, so they take the other one. They decide to stop at a small village along the way and set up camp for the night. Suddenly, there's a loud noise, and there's a space ship(!?) crashed into the ground. Yew wakes up the girl inside, who introduces herself as Magnolia Arch. She's from the moon and she's here to help.
So, the party presses on to Central Command, passing through a cave along the way. However, waiting for them at the exit is the goth girl, Bella, and her loyal servant centaur, Cú Chulainn, who's actually the result of necromancy gone wrong.
(Side note: I was wrong about Cú Chulainn and chariots. That's part of his lore, too. I was just ignorant.)
Anyway, they get Cú Chulainn's asterisk and finally arrive at Central Command. They drop the Soulstone in Tiz's mondo cool healing tank, then run away and hide in Edea's room. Then, something happens in the tank.
Due to technical difficulties, I couldn't play most of the cutscene properly, but it's the exact same as it was in Bravely Default, so it's not new to this channel. I tacked it on at the end.
Tiz starts showing some signs of life, and Magnolia arrives to fight off the imperial soldiers who are investigating. She even fends off some kind of lich, which looks suspiciously like the one at the Earth Temple! (Don't worry about it.)
Magnolia brings Tiz out, and after two long years, he's finally awake. He and Edea have a teary reunion (well, Edea's the teary one), and through the pendant, Agnès does too.
That's where we'll leave off for now! Stay tuned for the next session!
