From the first PlatinumGames release right into the latest! Or, well, sort of. Nier Automata launched on PS4 back in 2017, but one week ago as of this publishing, it was released on Switch! I love the game, so I figured a re-release was the perfect excuse to play it again, and this time stream it.

I have to admit, whenever anything is ported to Switch, there's usually a skeptical little voice in the back of my head asking: how much did they compromise to get this version working? I love my Switch, but we all know it's not exactly a powerhouse. That's why I'm pleased to report that it doesn't *feel* like they compromised on anything! In my head, I know that it's targeting 30FPS instead of 60, but in my gut, with a controller in my hand, I don't feel a difference. And, hell, they even got it running at a full 1080p, compared to the PS4's 900p!

Now, just to put it in writing, I had never played a Yoko Taro game before this, and I haven't played another one since. That means that it's all but guaranteed that I'm going to miss references, nods, and other assorted allusions to Nier. But that's fine! This game stands up more than well enough on its own! Just know that I'm not going to be able to bring that kind of context to this playthrough.

So what is this game, anyway? Well, it's a character action game in the same vein as Bayonetta and Devil May Cry. There are also plenty of RPG elements, like fetch quests and fishing (okay fine, and gaining experience to level up). Oh, and there are a variety of shoot-'em-up sections in different flavors: top-down, side-scrolling, twin stick, even a Star Fox-like rail shooter. So, uh, it kinda defies categorization.

What's it about? Well, the premise is, several thousand years ago, aliens invaded Earth and used an army robotic "machine lifeforms" to force humanity to flee to the moon. Humanity responded by creating their own army of androids, stationed in orbit above the planet. The two sides have been locked in a stalemate ever since.

Will we finally turn the tides of war and finally liberate Earth from the invaders so that mankind can return? Stay tuned!
