Okay, so technical issues (classified as PEBCAK) aside, we're back at the bridge to the mall, and 2B is not looking good. Stumbling her way across, she's beset upon by two berserk androids, and she's in no condition to fight. Suddenly, a rescue! It's A2, who's just fine! 2B makes her final plea, leaving her memory for A2 and asking her to take care of everyone.

Meanwhile, 9S wakes up in the city and immediately sets out for 2B's black box signal. He gets to the bridge just in time to see A2 killing 2B, which sends him into a rage. Suddenly, a massive structure rises from the ground. A2 is rendered unconscious and 9S is knocked off the bridge into the chasm. They won't wake up for another two weeks.

So! The structure of the game is changing. We're now given the option to play A2's story or 9S's, and once you complete a segment, you can choose to continue or switch to the other character. You have to go through both characters' stories regardless, so do what feels right. For me, that means starting with A2.

A2 fights similarly to 2B, but she has a few differences. The first one is that holding the light attack button is a taunt instead of an extra attack. It's way easier than having to mash clicking the left stick to flicker your Pod's light in enemies' eyes.

That's all we'll get for now, because A2 has to struggle with having a companion for the first time in who knows how long. Pod 042, acting on 2B's final order, is now serving as A2's support, despite her wishes. After some repeated probing, A2 declares that she's going to kill every goddamn machine she can find. Great! That means Pod can point her to the desert.

There's a new Goliath-class machine called Hegel there, and it's such a big pain that A2 decides to activate B-mode. What's that? Why, it's Berserker mode! As Pod informs us, it may come with higher attack power and speed, but it also means lower defense and taking damage over time. You can stuff yourself with healing items to prolong it, but it'll drain your health to 1, which kinda makes Auto-Item Use a good chip to use. Anyway, this boss is actually a real pain, and I don't think Berserk mode is actually useful here. Too many ranged attacks, too much running around. Defeating it brings the first A2 segment to a close.

Meanwhile, 9S wakes up in the Resistance camp, and there's Devola and Popola. They explain themselves a bit more here: they're a pair of medical androids (which makes them the only ones who could have repaired 9S with the Bunker gone). Their models are rare, though, because one pair did something that's, uh, extremely significant in Nier! In fact, because of what that pair did, all the Devola and Popola models were destroyed, except for these two. All the records from back then were destroyed too, so this is more like secondhand knowledge. In any event, they actually seem to enjoy what they're doing now, because it's like they're atoning for their sins.

Anyway! 9S is filled with bad feelings and he wants to kill every machine... and then kill A2. He goes to check out the new tower that popped up just outside the camp, but he can't even hack in. A message says he has to unlock the sub-units before he can go in. Of course, the sub-units are locked too, and he'll need some access keys. But! The message says he gets a tour of their new resource recovery units! So let's go to the forest (eventually).

The resource recovery unit is another, slightly smaller tower that apparently has the words "Meat Box" written above the entrance. This tower is just kind of a gauntlet, where you just climb up and fight waves of enemies along the way. 9S doesn't seem particularly amused by it, and at the top, there's some core. 9S destroys it, takes the access key, and finishes off a machine soldier that wasn't quite dead yet.

He's got a lot of anger to work out.

Because of the way this segment works, I can't save at the choice screen, so we get a teaser for the next bit: A2's filters are clogged with sand, so she'll need to replace it at the Resistance camp. See you then!
