What? Why In The World I Bought A 2nd Wii U In 2025! Am I Nuts?
While many people, myself included, are super excited for the Nintendo Switch 2, Super Switch, or whatever Nintendo is going to call the new Nintendo Switch, one of the systems I am most excited about this year isn't the Switch 2. It's actually a system from right before the Switch, that being the Wii U. I recently bought a 2nd 8GB White Wii U system, and the major reason why is to install Homebrew Apps on it. I had done this with my Wii, and I wanted to do the same with my Wii U. The nice thing is that it's never been easier to hack your Wii U, which is why I bought a 2nd Wii U in 2025. You may be wondering if I am nuts, but let me explain.
There are many nefarious reasons to install homebrew on any system, many use it simply to pirate games. I'm not about that, I want to own the games I am playing. But one of the things I loved about having hacked my Wii was I was able to backup my Wii Library to an external hard drive. My oldest daughter was 6 when I got my Wii at launch, and kids of that age just aren't careful with disc-based games. Thanks to my friend Shawn Long, AKA @RGT85 who recently posted a video about hacking the Wii U, I learned that you can now backup Wii U Disks. So why does it matter?
One major issue with the Wii U is the fact that the disks are extremely delicate. One scratch and the disk will no longer read. I again have a young daughter who loves playing games like her older sister. She also isn't the most careful with things, so I really don't want her to handle my Wii or Wii U disks. With an external hard drive, I can not only back up my library of Wii & Wii U titles, but also my Gamecube disks. But there's more!
The coolest Wii U homebrew app addresses a major issue with the system. The Wii U Pro Controller is ok, but I prefer other controllers. There's an app that allows you to use almost any Bluetooth-enabled controller with the system! So I can use so many more controllers with my Wii U!
Have you owned a Wii U? Are you a fan of the system?
