Oculus Quest 2 NEEDS Competition, HTC VIVE Standalone VR Headset Soon? / Standalone VR Headsets 2021
Thanks to the fantastically priced Oculus Quest 2, and before that the widely adopted Oculus Rift S PC VR headset, Oculus and Facebook are running away with the commercial VR install base, VR is still in it's infancy, it's certainly not mainstream yet, but Oculus are relatively unchallenged in this growing space currently...and it is growing fast. Other manufacturers have been watching this success unfold for a while now and 2021 feels like the perfect time for companies like HTC, Valve, Apple, Sony and so on to step up and offer consumers an alternative to the Quest 2, competition is always a great thing and the sooner we get it the sooner VR will start to realise its fullest potential. It's still early days but it truly feels like we'll have more than a few new VR headsets coming out in 2021 and it looks like the HTC Vive standalone VR headset / HTC standalone VR headset could be the first real contender to the Quest 2 and it's throne...
My go to VR headset has always been Oculus, I currently own the Oculus Quest 2 and two Oculus Rift S headsets (I bought a spare after they discontinued it, just incase my current one breaks & I can't get replacement parts) but even with my enjoyment of Oculus tech I can still see how desperately we need competition within the emerging standalone VR headset market & the more commercially friendly/consumer friendly PC VR market (pricing, ease of use etc...). If Oculus are allowed to continue unchallenged for years to come then it will become increasingly difficult to move people away from the infrastructure and ecosystem they have already spent years building so now feels like the ideal time to create more consumer choice within the VR market. VR news and discussions about the state of VR have been constantly lately but some very palpable excitement is starting to grow regarding the HTC Vive standalone. HTC have started teasing a reveal of this brand new headset & the potential for them to release something that can go toe to toe with the Oculus Quest 2 (likely to be more expensive but far more high spec) is great news.
HTC aren't the first to create an alternative standalone VR headset (the Pico Neo series are moving onto their 3rd iteration) but they'll certainly be the first to offer a full blown challenge to Oculus as an established name in the market already. Competition is always positive and it will push VR forward in new and exciting ways far quicker than if one company is left unchecked and unchallenged for years to come. I for one can't wait to see who challenges Oculus & Facebook for their VR crown, if it means we have more choice & more exciting products then I'm all in on the possibilty of new VR headsets coming soon...
