There's something about VR sword fighting / a good VR sword fighting game that never gets old. Had a hard day at work? No worries, go chop off some heads. Stressed out? Let off some steam by chopping off some arms. I've played a solid selection of the best VR sword fighting games / the best VR arena games but I'm only just now discovering Swordsman VR, a sword fighting VR game that just recently added a pirates and dismemberment update. The Swordsman VR dismemberment update aims to take the game to a whole new level of immersive, whacky, violent fun and after my play session today I'd say it succeeds in every concieveable way possible.

The Swordsman VR gameplay loop is fairly straight forward but contains more depth than I expected, the game offers a full campaign (where you can fight knights, vikings, samurai and many other historical sword fighters) with boss encounters and different environments, a wave based defense mode for some challenging fun & finally a horde mode against zombies...that's right, Swordsman VR doesn't just have vikings, knights and pirates, it has VR zombies as well! Completing levels gains you experiences points and cash which can be used to unlock better gear, stat upgrades and ultimately sweeter loadouts. Some of Swordsman VR's best weapons are also locked behind extremely challenging boss fights, so there is plenty to work towards and plenty of reason to return for repeat playthroughs.

My only issue with all VR arena fighting / VR arena sandbox / VR sword fighting games is the fact that it's all too easy to simply poke the enemies in the head for an instant kill... perhaps at some point the AI will try to defend their heads a little better but until then we can just poke away when the going gets tough. All in all Swordsman VR (available for PC VR & PSVR current and with a Swordsman VR Quest version hopefully coming soon) is a great, silly time, with tonnes of modifiers and options that can be scaled to create an experience tailored to exactly what you want to do. If you feel like chopping off some heads then Swordsman VR might just be the VR sword fighting game for you.
