It's time for another edition of One Year Later: the series where we take a look at prospects drafted out of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft and catch up with where they are today, one year removed from the draft. We've gone over a number of USNTDP players, from the Montreal Canadiens' Cole Caufield, to the Anaheim Ducks' Trevor Zegras, to the Minnesota Wild's Matthew Boldy. Well, today we're keeping up with that trend, as we head over to one of the top picks of the draft: the 5th overall selection by the Los Angeles Kings, Alex Turcotte.
Turcotte has established himself over the year as one of the top LA Kings prospects, especially at the centre position, with an already-stacked core of guys like Gabriel Vilardi, Tyler Madden, Jaret Anderson-Dolan, Rasmus Kupari, and Akil Thomas. After wrapping up his first season with the University of Wisconsin Badgers Men's Ice Hockey Team in the NCAA, coincidentally with USNTDP teammate and Habs top prospect Cole Caufield, Turcotte signed his entry level deal, and will either be playing for the Kings full time next season, or spending some time with the Ontario Reign in the AHL.
Turcotte was takend 5th overall at the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, behind Jack Hughes of the New Jersey Devils, Kaapo Kakko of the New York Rangers, Kirby Dach of the Chicago Blackhawks, and Bowen Byram of the Colorado Avalanche. He was taken ahead of guys like Moritz Seider of the Detroit Red Wings, Dylan Cozens of the Buffalo Sabres, Philip Broberg of the Edmonton Oilers, Trevor Zegras of the Anaheim Ducks, and Vasili Podkolzin from the Vancouver Canucks.
