if there's anyone to compose Video Game Music for an indie game music where you climb music and explore caves, it's gotta be Lena Raine lol

here's a 20 channel true chiptune remix of Lena Raine's awesome otherside song for the 1.18 Caves & Cliffs update! well... i'm sorry, i clickbaited you, technically the samples here aren't "true" 8-bit, but i made them by myself and none of them were above 640 bits, but that doesn't make for a good title lol.

anyways, this song came out on June 8th, 2021 to accompany the much anticipated Caves & Cliffs update. although the update itself is a little controversial with making the caves too big for some, making diamonds harder to find, and most importantly marking a dangerous path that Mojang/Microsoft is heading down with controversial updates, the music added was a followup Lena Raine's other awesome disc song from the 1.16 Nether update - Pigstep.

I love how these songs play off of each other. while Pigstep is dreary, heavy, and awesome, Otherside takes a different approach by being a bit more chill, uplifting, and open in it's sound. they also have similar keys, since Pigstep is in A minor and Otherside is in it's relative C major, and even goes into A minor later on lol. they're also found similar ways; thru chests. Pigstep in bastions, and Otherside in dungeons. so since these songs mirror each other so much, i played on that by making Otherside super cheery and using bright harsh chip samples. (i also covered Pigstep so you guys can eventually see how i contrasted it to Otherside as well ;3)

so as for the song itself, i made this back in January of 2021 and only edited this a few days ago. like i said i kept every sample under 640 bits, except for 1 tamborine sample i added in post and a pulse square sample. it was fun to experiment and try to make a chiptune only out of samples i made, since i find i so heavily rely on pre-existing or free download samples, and it forced me to utilize every 1 of the 20 channels. since this song is made by the very influential Lena Raine, who i inspire so much from, i tried dang hard to make it great and reflect her style as well, more or less by taking any sample and making it chip lol. i know her taking the spot of C418 is kind of controversial but, heck she did a dang good job

and on a personal note, i'll never forget the first day i heard this song. i woke up early out of bed and realized "oh hey there's a new song in the update" and listened to it right away. at first, because of my pre-existing expectations from Pigstep, i was kind of underwhelmed. but after getting home from work, updating MC to 1.18 and logging into my server, it started to make more sense. Otherside was meant to reflect the Caves & Cliffs added to the game, i was ridiculously lucky enough to get the disc on the 2nd dungeon i found and heard it ingame the same night knew i had to cover it lol. it took a few months, but here it is now :)

also if you're wondering, i also made a resource pack of some Minecraft songs i've covered, so once i release a few more i'll release that texture pack too :) hey maybe even make an album out of it we'll see
