Our First Experience Using GameShare On Switch 2 & Donkey Kong Bananza
Nintendo's Gameshare feature, particularly as it's evolving with the Nintendo Switch 2, offers a way for users to share digital games with others. It's important to differentiate between the traditional method of account sharing and the newer GameShare features. So let's take a look at our first experience using Nintendo's GameShare with Donkey Kong Bananza on the Nintendo Switch 2.
So how does it work?
With the advent of the Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo has introduced more defined game-sharing functionalities:
GameShare (Multiplayer Sharing): This is a specific feature for compatible games that allows multiple Switch 2 (and sometimes original Switch) consoles to play a single copy of a game together, often in a unique multiplayer experiences. In our example here, you can have the primary player controlling Donkey Kong himself, while the player using GameShare controls Odd Rock or Pauline.
Pairing:
From within the pause menu, there's a Gameshare option. Launch this on the host Switch 2 and then grab the Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite or Switch OLED you plan on sharing the game with. From here, launch the GameShare menu, and you'll start searching for the primary machine. Once found, it joins the game session and you're ready to play.
Here's how GameShare works for Donkey Kong Bananza:
Co-op Focus: Donkey Kong Bananza is designed with a two-player co-op mode. Player one controls Donkey Kong, while player two controls Pauline, who rides on DK's back and helps by shooting vocal blasts to interact with the environment and enemies.
One Game Copy Needed: The core benefit of GameShare here is that only one person needs to own Donkey Kong Bananza for two people to play together in co-op mode. This is a significant consumer-friendly feature.
Host and Guest Roles:
The player who owns the game (the "host") will be playing on a Nintendo Switch 2 and controlling Donkey Kong.
The second player (the "guest") will be playing as Pauline.
GameShare Options:
Local GameShare (Switch 2 to Switch 2): If both players have a Nintendo Switch 2 console and are in the same physical location, they can connect locally to play the co-op mode.
Local GameShare (Switch 2 to Original Switch): This is a particularly noteworthy feature! A Nintendo Switch 2 owner can actually share Donkey Kong Bananza with a player on an original Nintendo Switch console for local co-op. The Switch 1 player will control Pauline. This is a form of streaming, where the Switch 2 renders the game and streams the video to the Switch 1, which sends back input.
Online GameShare (Switch 2 to Switch 2 via GameChat): If both players have a Nintendo Switch 2, they can play online co-op using GameShare via "GameChat" (which requires a Nintendo Switch Online subscription for the host). This allows players in different locations to team up. Note: GameChat is a Switch 2-exclusive feature, so online GameShare is not possible between a Switch 2 and an original Switch.
Pauline's Role: As Pauline, the second player doesn't have independent movement. Instead, they assist Donkey Kong by using Pauline's vocal blasts, which can be controlled with Joy-Con 2's "Mouse Mode" for aiming. It's more of an "assist" co-op experience rather than two fully independent characters.
Key Points to Remember for Donkey Kong Bananza's GameShare:
It's for Co-op, Not Independent Play: GameShare in Donkey Kong Bananza is specifically designed for the game's two-player cooperative mode. It's not a way for two people to play the full single-player game on separate consoles simultaneously, each progressing independently.
Switch 2 is the Host: The player who owns the game and initiates GameShare must be on a Nintendo Switch 2 console.
Internet Connection for Online: Online GameShare requires an internet connection and a Nintendo Switch Online subscription for the host.
Switch 1 Limitations: While original Switch consoles can participate in local GameShare, they are limited to playing as Pauline and cannot play online via GameShare.
In essence, Nintendo has implemented GameShare in Donkey Kong Bananza to make its unique co-op experience more accessible, allowing friends and family to jump in and play together even if only one person owns the game, and even if one player has an older Switch model.
