P-47 Aces was the sequel to P-47 which was released in 1988. The only difference between the two games is that you had a 3d background in P-47 Aces. I don't think game was a commercial success, because true 3d games were being introduced at this time. The 3do, Sega Saturn, and Sony Playstation game systems were essentially 3d console systems. Most PC games were transitioning to 3d, and the software releases at the time were a clear reflection of this. In 1994, you had games like X-Wing, Tie Fighter, Star Wars Jediknight, Duke Nukem, Doom 2, etc. Every few 2d games were made from 1994 and onwards. Most of the 2d games transposed on painted 3d environments didn't do so well commercially, and they never made sequels for most of them.

1994 was a time when we saw a lot of technological changes in the computer and console gaming world. 2d gaming was the norm for software development in the 1980s to the early 1990s, because of the technological limitations at the time. However, technology always progresses, and people want to experience new things. You did see a lot of games like P-47 Aces up to 1994, most of these games were old school games of the early 1990s and late 1980s. These games still utilized bitmap graphics which were at the pinnacle of its development in the early 1990s.

As for this game, it was painfully and extremely difficult. From what you see on the video, there is no way to dodge enemy fire. It seems to be coming from every direction. I think the game was made so the player expends as many quarters as possible, so the arcade owner makes as much money as possible. Sometimes when a game is too difficult, it isn't really that fun to play. Not only that, the graphics on this game was okay for a game released in 1994, but it wasn't ground breaking. One of my major complaints about this game was the level of difficulty. I really didn't see much of a difference between the first game, and this game. There was a difference in the graphics, this had much better graphics, and it probably used 32 bit graphics on a 3d image background. It is like a painted background in 3d, but it isn't really 3d. The game play is still 2d. Games like these started to go out of fashion in the mid 1990s. I think 2d games were more or less very popular in the 8 bit and 16 bit systems due to the limitations in technology. A good analogy would be a transition from propeller aircraft to jet aircraft. Polygonal graphics technology was clearly superior to bitmap graphics when it came to 3d applications. It was superior in terms of scaling in a 3d environment which gives you the smoothness in the animation and movement.
