Operation Wolf was the first shooter of this type that was ever released. It was a classic, because it was the first and the best game of its class. I played this game in the arcades back in 1987 at Gourmet burger place called Flakey Jacks. What really caught my attention was the recoiling gun, I don't think there was anything like that anywhere in the world at that time.

This game was a reflection of its time. In the 1980s, we had airline hikackings, the Iran-Contra incident, and the Sandinistas in Nicaragua. We also had movies like Delta Force, Commando, Rambo, and other movies like this. The story line is similar in that, you have your lone hero who takes on hundreds of bad guys and rescues the hostages. The main character of this game is like a Chuck Norris, Sylvester Stallone, or a Arnold Schwartznegger you get the picture.

Now, I will get into the game. The game itself was ported into many different systems. It was ported to the Commodore 64, Nintendo Entertainment System, Turbo Grafx-16/PC Engine, Sega Master System, Amiga 500, Atari ST, MSX computers, Amstrad CPC, IBM, etc. Everyone wanted it on the systems they were using. I did get the NES ported version, and it was a terrible. I didn't actually buy it, one of my friends lent it to me at school. There were worse versions, the Commodore 64 version was worse than the NES version. All in all, the ported versions of this game were never as good as the original arcade. However, I did get the PC Dos version of this game in 1990, and that came pretty close to the arcade. The animation and sound sucked, but the graphics was the closest it came to the arcade version. The PC version had VGA 256 colors, so it looked great. The arcade version was still the best.

When I was a kid, I used to play Operation Wolf every weekend I went to the arcade. It was my favorite arcade game. The person who owned the arcade set the game on the hardest setting! Every time I played this game, I was never able to clear the 2nd level or jungle.

The A.I. in the game isn't very sophisticated, not like the game now. The enemies in the game come in the same way from level one to the last level. If you played the game enough times, you can predict what is going to come and from where. The only randomness happens when you are moving from one scene to another, sometimes you can run into an enemy patrol. When that happens, you have to fight enemy helicopters and some ground forces.

To sum up the entire game, it is a timeless classic. Go download it and play it! You'll be play it over and over again!
