During the mid and late 1980s and early 1990s, Taito was the company that made very successful shooters of this type. The first one being Operation Wolf which was released in 1986. The graphics, animation, and sound were amazing at the time. Operation Wolf and Space Gun were both 16 bit games, so these games were clearly superior to anything in the home console or computer market at the time.

Space Gun tried to capitalize on the Aliens franchise of the 1980s and early 1990s which was a very popular movie at the time. The characters in Space Gun don't exactly look like the characters in Aliens; however, the ideas were similar. Often times when a company can't get the rights to produce a game from a movie franchise, they would often times make their own version. A good example would be Wing Commander. Origin Systems tried to get the rights to produce a space simulator based on Star Wars, but Lucas Arts denied their request. As a result, Origin created the Wing Commander franchise which was very successful up to the late 1990s.

I am going to critique the game. The video and the graphics on this game was excellent at the time. I did play this game in the arcades, and it had two space age looking guns. The guns recoiled every time you pulled the trigger. The graphics detail on the characters was pretty good, and smoothness in the animation was good. There was no jerkiness when characters moved, nor did the game slow down when a lot of characters came on the screen at one time.

Game sounds was typical for games of that era. The interesting thing is that the sound technology in computers and console systems stayed pretty much the same since the late 1990s. The reason for it being, sounds were recorded on wave files and later on mp3 files to make the file sizes smaller. One of the bad things about the game is that it is a very short game, and it wasn't a challenging game.

All in all, I would recommend you to download a Raine 0.63 and try out this game. I was lucky enough to grown up with this progression of computer technology from the early 1980s to the present. Old games like these gives you an idiot of how technology was 24 years ago.

You can play these old games, I have a directory on my website that have links to all my videos about emulator tutorials.
