Castlevania was a classic NES game, and it spawned the Castlevania franchise. The game itself was one of the best console game that was released at the time, it had state of the art graphics, and the game play response was excellent. The game retailed at about $49.99+tax when it first came out. That was a lot of money back then, a lunch cost about 50 cents, and a gallon of gasoline was about 75 to 80 cents.

During the early 1980s, you had systems, like the Atari 2600, Atari 5200, Coleco Vision, Apple IIc, Commodore 64, Intellivision and other systems which had terrible graphics. In 1985, the Nintendo Entertainment System was released with the best 8 bit graphics compared to any system at the time.

Now, I will get into the video and sound of the game, the graphics were very detailed. All the characters actually looked like its 2d representations of what a zombie or Count Dracula would look like. The graphics weren't pixels, like in the Atari 2600 where they look like stick figure. Even the main character Simon Belmont, looked like a character you can identify with. The background graphics were detailed, compared to the dull backgrounds of most games at the time. The graphics were good, but the animation was even better. The game was very responsive, and it had great play value.

The sound and music on the game were very good if you compared it to a Apple IIc, Atari 5200, Commodore 64, Atari 7800, or a Coleco Vision. The Nintendo's sound system couldn't reproduce human voices well, but the music and sound were distinguishable. They were simple sounds, but the holy water bottle hitting the floor sounded like breaking glass. The NES's sound system had 5 channels, so the sound system could play more than one instrument at a time. Not only could the system play more than one instrument at a time, the action sounds were not affected by the music either. It is a far cry from the mono sounds coming from most systems at the time.

The game play was good, but it was not a very easy game to play. You had to know which weapons to use against the bosses, and you had to know how to engage them. I used to order Nintendo Power magazines and get hints on how to beat certain games. Those were the days.

All in all, this was a classic 8 bit Nintendo game, and it was one of the best games ever made in my opinion of all time. They made many sequels and variations of the game from 1986 to the present.
