Review:
Golgo 13 for the NES was one of my favorite games on the system. I was lucky enough to buy this game for $19.99 at Kaybee Toy Stores back in 1989. The interesting thing about this game was the how the game play scenery changed. You start off in a classic 2d side scrolling mode, and it changes to a 1st person shooter. You are able to pilot a helicopter in other levels, and in other scenes you are under water with scuba gear. Later in the game, the game play style changes to a 3d 1st person view. The change to different aspects and points of view made the game interesting, and it made the game fun.
Golgo 13 for the NES was a story driven game, it is like a interactive movie. It was the first of its kind anywhere at the time. Being a story driven game, gave you an incentive to play to find out what will happen next. It is quite a contrast from most NES games at the time which had very simplistic story lines. At the time, I didn't know Golgo 13 was a character from a comic or anime movie. The interesting thing is when I saw the first manga(anime movie) based on Golgo 13, I associated with this game. I saw the first Golgo 13 based anime movie back in 2005, it was called Golgo 13 The Professional. The anime was made in 1983, but I didn't know if this movie even existed.
The storyline in the game is so what different than what Golgo 13 is known for. The man is an assassin, who kills for money. The story for the game is set in the Cold War, and the bad guys are the Soviets and Eastern Bloc countries. In this game, Golgo 13 was hired by the U.S. government to solve a mystery, it is different from what Golgo 13 is known for. The graphics on the game was very good for a 8 bit NES game, the sound were good. I do have some complaints about the game play especially when you play the 2d side scrolling view, ducking doesn't allow you to dodge bullets. The only way to dodge bullets is by jumping, and sometimes it is nearly impossible avoid getting hit. The 3d maze section was very choppy, and the reason for it was purely due to the lack of technology at the time.
All in all, the game was fun, but it didn't really have any replay value. The game is more like an interactive movie, some of the movie scenes were quite rudimentary, like stick figures. You can't blame the programmers, because they had to work with 8 bit technology and limited graphics capabilities.
