In which I have a little too much fun trying to imitate the Duke Nukem voice (and also the alien leader).

Anyway. Duke Nukem 2 represents a big step up in production quality from Duke Nukem (https://youtu.be/W8PIYT8lG7E), in much the same way as Commander Keen 4 (https://youtu.be/DKrZDPptEe8) vastly improves on Commander Keen 1 (https://youtu.be/ClWHHAafbAk). The levels are more detailed, the animations are smoother, the colors are used more effectively, and there's digital music and sound effects. The overall look and feel of the game world is closer to the more familiar later installments of the series. And, of course, Duke's character and ego are bigger and more exaggerated than before.

Regardless of the cosmetic overhaul, many of the old bonuses return, including cans of soda you can collect for health or shoot to make them fly off and try to grab for extra points. Items in crates are also back, as are the crates with bombs inside, though you can now tell those apart because Duke will walk behind them. And there are end-of-level secret bonuses again, including shooting out all the cameras, as before.

You don't, to the best of my recollection, get the permanent upgrades of Duke 1, but you can find temporary weapon powerups. Rapid fire does what you'd expect. Lasers shoot through walls and other obstacles. The flamethrower is relatively short-ranged but powerful, and can propel you upward by firing down. Rockets are especially destructive.
