Before Duke Nukem 3D made Duke a household name, he got his start as the protagonist in one of Apogee's many platformer games. And sometimes (like in this particular version) he was called Duke Nukum, with a 'u', because of concerns about potential copyright issues involving a Captain Planet villain with the same name, though that never ended up amounting to anything, and Apogee eventually trademarked and resumed using the original spelling.

The basic idea of Duke's personality is already in place at this point. He's a Saturday morning cartoon sort of character, an over-the-top badass stereotype with an ego bigger than Shrapnel City. On the other hand, he does also have the skills to back up his attitude, which is fortunate considering that he keeps having to save the near-future world that his games are set in.

Other than his personality, though, the first Duke Nukem game bears only a faint resemblance to what the series would eventually become. The look and feel are almost entirely different, as is the gameplay. There's only one weapon. Hardly any opportunity to quip any one-liners. The stages, though well-designed, don't come across as real places. And can you really picture the Duke Nukem of Duke 3D chasing after balloons for bonus points when there's alien butt to kick?

In this first installment of the Duke Nukem series, Duke also collects a number of permanent powerups across the course of the game, including a jump upgrade and a claw that can cling to certain ceilings. It's almost Metroidvania-ish, except that the game is broken into levels that you must complete sequentially, without the option to return to previous stages, so not really. Later Duke Nukem games pretty much abandon the permanent upgrade concept altogether, which is kind of a shame.

Also, I just noticed I finished stage one with exactly 69 thousand points. Feels weirdly appropriate for a Duke Nukem game.
