RARE COLLECTIBLE #3

Calico Jack Spanish Real
Approximate Value: $6,900
Clue: It’s a piece of eight from a pirate chest. Could this one be among the best?
Location: Northeast Quadrant. Hidden in between the gray elephant’s legs.
Clyde’s Notes: Jack Rackham, or Calico Jack, was an English pirate whose nickname came from the colorful clothes he wore. Calico Jack is most famous for employing two female pirates: Anne Bonny, who was also his lover, and Mary Read. This silver Spanish Real is the coin Calico Jack gave his executioner in exchange for his release. Instead, the prison guard kept the coin and hung Jack along with eleven other crew members in 1720. I picked this coin on my one and only trip to Jamaica, back in 1964. The souvenir shop owner didn’t know that Calico Jack stamped all of his money with his initials.

RARE COLLECTIBLE #4

T-Rex Third Claw
Approximate Value: $10,750
Clue: It survives to this very day, it helped T-Rex capture prey.
Location: Southeast Quadrant. Directly below the starfish in the nature bin.
Clyde’s Notes: Although one of the most popular dinosaurs, very few actual Tyrannosaurus Rex fossils exist today. In fact, there are only thirteen T-Rex claw fossils considered to be genuine, all of which reside in museums. In 1997, an amazing discovery was made. A complete T-Rex forelimb showed that it had three fingers instead of two, though the third was much smaller and not used (vestigial). I picked up this fossil at a rock hound show in Tucson. I believe it is a T-Rex third digit, which could make it very valuable to fossil collectors and natural history museums.
