Infinite Warfare was destined to fail. After two years of futuristic Call of Duty, the broader community had enough of this experiment. The advanced movement fad had run its course, and the players wanted a return to form for the franchise, not to mention growing resentment for loot boxes and microtransactions, specialists abilities in multiplayer, and the many other issues this era of CoD had developed. So when Activision and Infinity Ward proudly announced Infinite Warfare, things …did not go well. While the three-year development cycle gave Infinity Ward and the other studios extra time to prepare their game, it also made it impossible to respond to criticisms and growing resentment to trends all of the futuristic games shared, a pattern we would see once again with the release of Call of Duty: Vanguard last year.

Despite all of the negative attention Infinite Warfare received before and after launch, there was one bright spot for a certain set of the CoD community; Zombies was back. When Zombies in Spaceland was announced nearly six years ago to the date, the reaction was… mixed. It’s been forgotten about now, but the initial reaction to IW Zombies was not positive. A large portion of the Zombies community wanted a return to World at War’s gritty roots, and Spaceland wasn’t that. Despite that, this iteration of the gamemode went on, getting less and less coverage from popular content creators as each map progressed. And then we discovered Him. The Mephistopheles boss fight was the start of a complete 180 for the community. This is to date the hardest boss fight in the Zombies franchise, as well as the best super Easter Egg experience and reward. It ended things on what is arguably the highest note in the franchise. As time has gone on, more and more people are looking back at this game fondly. Appropriately enough, the Zombies game based entirely on film has become a bit of a cult classic, even rivaling many of the Treyarch-made modes.

If you watched the Advanced Warfare video, you’ll already know that I was done with Call of Duty by the time this game came out, and was only buying the game for Zombies. And while this game did technically have Zombies, the community’s thinking at the time was that the Zombies modes that Treyarch didn’t make were inferior and not worth your time. And because I was a broke high school kid at the time, I didn’t have the money to spend on something I wasn’t sure I would even like, nor did I want to support the rest of the game, so I passed on it.

Not unlike Advanced Warfare, I watched the game get updated from the sidelines, and given what I know about the game, I’m more optimistic for this iteration than any of the other non-Treyarch titles. I saw gameplay of all the maps when they were released half a decade ago, but I haven’t played any of them myself, so I’m going in as blind as my memory will allow. So having just finished the game’s campaign to familiarize myself with the mechanics and weapons, let’s see what my first game of Zombies in Spaceland has in store.
