Playing windows games on Linux using Wine :
Final Fantasy 13

The first entry in the Fabula Nova Crystallis : Each game will share some common mythology and be connected by this central theme.
The events takes place in Cocoon and Gran Pulse a world ruled by fal'Cie where six L'Cie will have to unite and challenge their fate.

This game, first appeared on PS3 (in late 2009) finally released on Steam (windows only) on late 2014.
On a gameplay note, like in Final Fantasy XII :
- Enemies are visible on the world (no random event)
- The party leader can be controlled (the rest of the party is controlled by ia)
But the combat mode changed a lot :
- Active time battle
- Each character can learn and use six different roles
- Synergy system : Chose a combination of role for your characters and switch them at will during battle
- The "combo" meter : each enemies got a choc combo meter, when full it will take much greater damage until it depleated
A great fealling of fast-pace action.

On a story note, the first 15 hours or so feels like a tutorial (no real choice, party with only 2 members) and the first 30 hours are like a long strainght line without any choice nor side quest (wich eventually appears on Gran Pulse).

But anyway the game is great 10/10 would spend another 100 Hours to save Cocoon again !

-- Installation --
1/ Getting wine + winetricks
2/ Using winetricks install steam
3/ Using winetricks install dotnet35
4/ Install vcredist 2010 and 2012 using winetricks
5/ Launch steam and download the game

-- Troubleshoot --
-If the actual game is crashing at launch
Make sure vcrun 2010 and 2012 are installed
Try to install the DirectX setup from the game folder Steam/steamapps/common/FINAL\ FANTASY\ XIII/_CommonRedist/DirectX/Jun2010/DXSETUP.exe
If directx's update fails during installation: you'll need to delete some files (the installer is unable to overwrite them):
in the folder _path_to_your_wineprefix_/drive_c/windows/system32 move away every xinput*.dll then try to install dxsetup again, and move those xinput*.dll files back in.
-The game tries to install dotnet each time you launch it
rename installscript.vdf in installscript.vdfbak in the steam folder
-Fixing dotnet
Installing dotnet35 on Linux can be troublesome, sometimes it just won't install properly. If dotnet ends up broken in your wineprefix, you can use microsoft's dotnetcleanuptool to cleanly uninstall dotnet from your wineprefix and try to install it again ( forcing a reinstall with winetricks script needs some tweaks tho, like editing the xpsep installation line if it's allready installed )
-Bypassing the launcher
If you've tried anything but can't get the launcher to work, you can bypass it by launching steam, and lauching the game directly :
Steam/steamapps/common/FINAL FANTASY XIII/white_data/prog/win/bin/ffxiiiimg.exe

-- Performance note --
The game performed badly on my old cpu (amd fx8150) by the time I had to play in 720p : the game was sometime really slow in some huge battle.
But with a powerfull cpu this isn't a problem anymore (but I still can't increase shadow quality and antialiasing as it hurts framerate a lot)
