For this week's Surprise Trade, I will be trading Charmander, at least I get to trade one of the original Starter Pokémon from back in the day. I usually breed for 31 IVs in at least 4 or 5 stats, some Charmander have the Hidden Ability of Solar Power. At the start of the video, I enter a Mystery Gift code which gives TMs for Stealth Rock and Baton Pass, which is where I do before starting Surprise Trade.
The Nature that I went with is Timid, while the 7 Star Charizard Tera Raid event came with a Modest Nature, Timid is usually preferred for the extra Speed, and for Egg Moves, I went with Dragon Rush, Ancient Power, Iron Tail, and Belly Drum for the moves, Charmander also learns Bite, Counter, Metal Claw, and Dragon Tail for other moves. If you want examples for the moves I went with, I chose the ones that I saw to be the most useful or are those aren't easy to get. Dragon Rush can be learned from many Dragon-type Pokémon, like Dratini, Gible, and Deino, it learns Ancient Power from Glimmet, Rolycoly, and Dunsparce, it can get Iron Tail from Pikachu and Orthworm, and it can get Belly Drum from Makuhita, and a bunch of Pokémon learn it as a breeding move, like Marill, Slowpoke, and Teddiursa.
Being a Starter Pokémon, Charmander has the usual level up evolutions, evolving into Charmeleon at Level 16, and into Charizard at Level 36. For moves, it can learn Scratch, Growl, Ember, Smokescreen, Dragon Breath, Fire Fang, Slash, Flamethrower, Scary Face, Fire Spin, Inferno, and Flare Blitz. Charmander learns Fire Fang at Level 17, while Charmeleon learns it at Level 19, and it does at least learn Flamethrower during the Charmeleon stage at Level 30. Once fully evolved into Charizard, it learns Air Slash and Heat Wave.
Next are TMs, and I will list what Charizard can learn, it can get Acrobatics, Aerial Ace, Bulldoze, Swift, Rock Tomb, Flame Charge, Air Cutter, Dig, Brick Break, Shadow Claw, Body Slam, Fire Punch, Thunder Punch, Dragon Claw, Rock Slide, Swords Dance, Fly, Dragon Dance, Will-O-Wisp, Crunch, Dragon Pulse, Fire Blast, Fire Pledge, Earthquake, Giga Impact, Blast Burn, Outrage, Overheat, Focus Blast, Hurricane, Hyper Beam, Solar Beam, and Tera Blast.
While I usually go over the current format of online battles, Charizard cannot be used in Ranked Battles, and it is in the NU Tier in the competitive scene. It is a good user of the Heavy-Duty Boots to switch in without having to take damage from Stealth Rock, because that is a massive drawback to Charizard, and it is a dangerous threat in the sun, when partnered with Torkoal which can set up the sun with Drought, Charizard's Fire-type moves, like Fire Blast and Overheat, deal huge amounts of damage, and if holding a Choice Specs, even Pokémon that resist Charizard's Fire-type moves will take a massive hit, and when Terastallized to a Fire Tera Type, no Pokémon is safe from an Overheat from Charizard, that is if you take Choice Specs, the sun, and the Fire Tera Type into account.
Charizard can even use Flamethrower if it wants accuracy over power, and for other moves, Air Slash is the preferred Flying-type move, while Hurricane has more power, it is less accurate in the sun, and for coverage, it can use Solar Beam, Dragon Pulse, and Focus Blast for options. Charizard can even go with a Grass Tera Type with Tera Blast to take out any Water or Rock-type Pokémon that try to take advantage of Charizard's weaknesses to those types.
Going over Double Battles, Charizard can use Heat Wave to hit both targets, and while it cannot be used in the current format of Ranked Battles, or even in VGC Tournaments, it has seen success during the Sword & Shield VGC Tournaments, that was because Charizard can Gigantamax, but that was never carried over to this game.
Charizard is a solid Pokémon against Tera Raids, while we did have the 7 Star Tera Raid with the Dragon Tera Type, which is good on Charizard to turn its Water and Electric weaknesses into resistances, and also power up its Dragon Pulse, Fire is the better type for Tera Raids. I did find a spreadsheet going over the best counters for some 6 Star Tera Raids, and its best match-up is against Leafeon, that is if Leafeon's Tera Type is Grass, Bug, or Steel, and Leafeon knowing Charm, and it can use Sunny Day to activate Charizard's Solar Power.
While the Charmander line were popular picks back in Red & Blue, the first two Gyms back then had an advantage against it, making it more of the Hard Mode when going over the original Starter Pokémon. Charmander is even a solid pick when going through the main story in this game, it has the advantage against the first two Gyms, that is if we are going by level order, and it does get access to moves like Ember and Fire Fang, and eventually Flamethrower, which becomes its main move, and when fully evolved, Flamethrower and Air Slash can help it get through most of the game.
