Before starting Surprise Trade, I show another Mystery Gift code which is happening during this weekend, and you get a Gastrodon that was used in a VGC Championship, we did already have Gastrodon that was given away through Mystery Gift, the difference is this one has Icy Wind, while the other had Ice Beam.
For Surprise Trade, I will be trading Deerling, and I wasn't sure whether to go with each season in the box, so I kept them in the Spring Form. You can change Deerling's form when it is in your party and when you next load the game, Deerling will change form depending on the province, for example, you get Spring Form at South Province, Summer Form at East Province, Autumn Form at West Province, and Winter Form at North Province. I breed for 31 IVs in at least 4 or 5 stats, and I went with Jolly for the Nature, some Deerling have the Hidden Ability of Serene Grace, an Ability it couldn't make use of previously, but it can now.
For Egg Moves, I went with Headbutt, Worry Seed, Synthesis, and Baton Pass. The rest of its moves are Agility, Sleep Talk, and Fake Tears, all of them it can learn through TM, Baton Pass is also a TM move in this game. It can get Headbutt from Lechonk, Maschiff, Tauros, and many other Pokémon, Worry Seed from the Skiddo and Sprigatito lines, Synthesis can also be learned from the Skiddo line, and it can get it from Leafeon as well, and Baton Pass from a variety of Pokémon, like Eevee, Fidough, and Girafarig.
Deerling has Tackle as a starting move, and Headbutt is a good move to have early on, mainly for the flinch chance. The rest of its level up moves are Growl, Sand Attack, Double Kick, Leech Seed, Bullet Seed, Take Down, Zen Headbutt, Energy Ball, Charm, Double-Edge, and Solar Beam, back in Gen 5, Deerling could not learn a Grass-type Physical move until it evolves into Sawsbuck, there was Energy Ball, but it is a Special move that works from Deerling's lower Special Attack stat. Its evolved form Sawsbuck learns Horn Leech upon evolution, which was its signature move back in Gen 5, and it can learn Megahorn.
Next are TMs, and I will list which moves Sawsbuck can learn, it can get Trailblaze, Bulldoze, Smart Strike, Dig, Body Slam, Seed Bomb, Light Screen, Thunder Wave, Stomping Tantrum, Swords Dance, Shadow Ball, Play Rough, Wild Charge, Grassy Terrain, Giga Impact, Leaf Storm, Hyper Beam, and Tera Blast.
Sawsbuck isn't a Pokémon that is used that much in online battles, but it does have a niche, it is the fastest Pokémon to have Serene Grace for its Ability, and if you are wondering, Jirachi and Shaymin are currently not available in this game, and there is Meloetta in its Pirouette Form which is the fastest Serene Grace user, but it cannot be used in Ranked Battles. If you looked at what Deerling could learn in Gen 5, the only moves that it can learn that can make use of Serene Grace were Energy Ball, Shadow Ball, Bounce, and that was basically it, it couldn't even put Serene Grace to use. In this game, it gets Headbutt, Body Slam, and Zen Headbutt, giving it moves to put the Ability to use. Sawsbuck can use a Silk Scarf for the held item, and its moves would be Headbutt for the boosted flinch chance, Thunder Wave to paralyze opponents, and it can have Horn Leech and Stomping Tantrum to round out its moves, and a Normal Tera Type can increase Headbutt's power. Sawsbuck is one of few Pokémon to get Sap Sipper, it can switch in on a Grass-type move to boost its Attack stat, and then attempt to sweep its opponents that way.
In Double Battles, Sawsbuck does get Chlorophyll for the boost in Speed, but it is outclassed by Hisuian Lilligant, but it does moves like Charm and Horn Leech to make it stand out, but there are better options. Sawsbuck does have the same type combo as Arboliva, which is a better choice for Double Battles, as Arboliva can set up the Grassy Terrain with Seed Sower, and it does get some good support moves to help its team out.
As with the main story, it was good they gave Deerling some moves to help it in the early game, access to Bullet Seed helps out, if you have Headbutt on it, this gives it a good Normal-type move early on, but the downside is its late evolution level, it evolves into Sawsbuck at Level 34. When evolved, Horn Leech is its main move while it can have Body Slam for its Normal-type move, it does get some good Physical moves like Megahorn, Stomping Tantrum, Wild Charge, and many other moves to put to use. Another bit of trivia about the Deerling line is that it has never been in a regional Pokédex ever since its debut in Pokémon Black & White, or its sequel Black 2 & White 2.
