Here is the first Baby Pokémon that I trade through Surprise Trade, and it is Azurill for this week. A new change in this generation is that previously, the only way to hatch an Azurill was if you gave a Marill or Azumarill the Sea Incense when breeding, otherwise you would hatch a Marill, but in this game, all Eggs from the Marill line hatch into Azurill. This is also the first time in this game where I hatch a Shiny Pokémon when hatching a box of the Pokémon, in this case, I got a Shiny Azurill, which is now an Azumarill, I do find it unusual how it changes from green to yellow when fully evolved.
I breed for 31 IVs in 4 or 5 stats, and I went with Adamant for the Nature, as that is the Nature you want when using Azurill, as that pairs well with Huge Power, I didn't go for the Hidden Ability of Sap Sipper as that is kind of a situational Ability, but the Grass immunity is helpful in Tera Raids.
For Egg Moves, I went with Aqua Jet, Belly Drum, Perish Song, and Soak, it can get Sing, Supersonic, Present, Tickle, and Copycat for other moves. Aqua Jet and Belly Drum are the moves you will want when breeding Azurill, it learns Aqua Jet from a variety of Water-type Pokémon, like Buizel, Quaxly, and Wiglett, and it learns Belly Drum from the Makuhita line. I chose Perish Song and Soak for the extra moves, as I like having four Egg Moves when breeding Pokémon.
Next is Azurill's level up moves, it has Splash, Tail Whip, Water Gun, Helping Hand, Bubble Beam, Charm, Slam, and Bounce. It evolves into Marill if it has a high enough friendship and it levels up, and Marill cannot learn Splash, as only Azurill can learn it. Marill learns Tackle, Rollout, Defense Curl, Aqua Tail, Play Rough, Aqua Ring, Rain Dance, Hydro Pump, Double-Edge, and Superpower. It evolves into Azumarill at Level 18, but you can hold off Marill's evolution to get Aqua Tail and Play Rough earlier, Marill learns Play Rough at Level 21, while Azumarill learns it at Level 25.
Next are TMs, and I will go over what Azumarill can learn, it can get Fake Tears, Trailblaze, Chilling Water, Bulldoze, Icy Wind, Dig, Brick Break, Body Slam, Ice Punch, Light Screen, Waterfall, Metronome, Grass Knot, Liquidation, Encore, Ice Spinner, Amnesia, Misty Terrain, and a few other moves.
Azumarill's competitive history has been interesting, in Gen 2, it was just a bulky Water-type that faced competition with Lapras and Vaporeon, in Gen 3, it gained Huge Power, but Water-type moves were Special back then. There was the Physical and Special Split in Gen 4 where Azumarill can use Physcial Water-type moves like Waterfall, and Gen 6 was where Azumarill became a top-tier Pokémon when it gained the Fairy-type, access to both Aqua Jet and Belly Drum, and it has remained a top-tier threat since then.
With the Terastal phenomenon in this game, Azumarill makes a good use of it, Water and Fairy are good Tera Types for further power up its STAB moves, if Azumarill wants coverage, Fire or Electric with access to Tera Blast can be used to surprise opponents that would normally counter Azumarill, Ground to power up Bulldoze, and Grass to boost the power of Trailblaze are some decent options. The main Azumarill set is Belly Drum, Liquidation, Play Rough, and Aqua Jet, it can use Superpower or Ice Spinner for a coverage option, Azumarill can even use a Choice Band or Assault Vest, but that would mean replacing Belly Drum for any of the coverage moves.
Azumarill might be good in Single Battles, but it isn't commonly used in Double Battles, it can learn Misty Terrain to set up, and it can use Perish Song when paired with Gothitelle when trapping opponents with Shadow Tag, but Azumarill isn't the Pokémon mainly used for Perish Trapping, which is the term used for Shadow Tag and Perish Song, Scream Tail or Flutter Mane are the Perish Song users that make use of that strategy. In the current format, Azumaril is ranked 61st in Double Battles, Gyarados and Palafin are used more in Double Battles than Azumarill is, but at least it ranks higher than Quaquaval, Drednaw, and Barraskewda as a Physical Water-type, and as for Fairy-type, it faces competition with Flutter Mane, Grimmsnarl, Scream Tail, Mimikyu, Iron Valiant, and Tinkaton, which rank higher than Azumarill.
Azumarill is one of the top Pokémon for Tera Raids, back when we had the Unrivalved Charizard event, Azumarill and Sylveon were the Pokémon that many players would use, Azumarill is mainly useful against Fighting and Dragon Tera Raids, that is if the Pokémon's base type is not Electric, Grass, or Poison, and the Water Tera Type can work against any Fire, Rock, or Ground Tera Raids, but Azumarill is mainly used for its Fairy Tera Type for Tera Raids. It's decent when going through the game, that is if you can hold off Marill's evolution to get Aqua Tail and Play Rough earlier, then you have a early game powerhouse, specially if you have one with Huge Power.
