This week's Surprise Trade, I will be trading Rotom, back in the days of Gen 4, there were players that at first believed that Rotom was a Legendary Pokémon, it did play the Legendary Pokémon Battle theme in Gen 4, but it is not really a Legendary Pokémon. To get the Rotom Catalog, you have to get it from one of the houses in Wyndon, and that is the location the Surprise Trade takes place at, because one of these houses has a Trainer that uses three Rotom in different forms, and you receive the Rotom Catalog from him. I breed for 31 IVs in at least 4 or 5 stats, and I went with Modest for the Nature, Rotom has higher Special Attack, for the Rotom forms, Bold or Calm are good Natures as they tend to be more defensive than the Electric/Ghost-type Rotom.
Being a genderless Pokémon, Rotom doesn't learn any Egg Moves, so they come with Astonish and Double Team, it does get Thunder Shock at Level 5 to help with the early game if every anyone who got one of them happens to be doing like a Wonderlocke, or Surpriselocke in this case, or a Surprise Trade challenge.
For the rest of Rotom's level up moves, it can get Confuse Ray, Charge, Electro Ball, Thunder Wave, Shock Wave, Hex, Substitute, Trick, Discharge, and Uproar. Starting with TMs, Rotom can get Light Screen, Reflect, Will-O-Wisp, Swift, Round, Helping Hand, Volt Switch, Electroweb, Electric Terrain, and Eerie Impulse, and for TRs, it can learn Thunderbolt, Thunder, Shadow Ball, Dark Pulse, Nasty Plot, Foul Play, Stored Power, and Ally Switch, and for Tutor moves, it can learn Rising Voltage and Poltergeist. In Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, Rotom learns Charge Beam, Flash, Psych Up, and Dream Eater for possible moves.
With Rotom's different forms, they have special moves and their type changes, for example, Wash Rotom is Electric/Water and learns Hydro Pump, Heat Rotom is Electric/Fire and its special move is Overheat, Frost Rotom is Electric/Ice and can learn Blizzard, Fan Rotom is Electric/Flying and it learns Air Slash, and Mow Rotom is Electric/Grass and its special move is Leaf Storm.
As with competitive battling, Wash Rotom is the best form, Electric/Water is a great type combination, it is only weak to Grass, and its special move Hydro Pump is a powerful Water-type move, despite the 80 accuracy of that move. For each Rotom form, the usual moves are Thunderbolt or Volt Switch for the Electric-type move, some sets use Will-O-Wisp as a way to cripple Physical Attackers, Dark Pulse or Shadow Ball for the coverage option, and Trick to screw up opponents. Wash Rotom can even use Thunder if it sets up the rain from Max Geyser when Dynamaxed, and if it has set up Electric Terrain with Max Lightning, so there are many ways to use Wash Rotom. Heat Rotom sees respectable use in online battles, its special move Overheat is a very powerful Fire-type move, even though it cuts Rotom's Special Attack stat when it is used, it can use Nasty Plot to work as a Special Attacker, Discharge or Thunderbolt work as its Electric-type move of choice. For the other forms, Mow Rotom can be decent, as Leaf Storm has the same effect as Overheat, the downside is that as a Grass-type, it is weak to a bunch of types, Frost Rotom is bad defensively, as Ice is the worse defensive type, and Fan Rotom is the weakest, Air Slash has 75 power, which feels weak compared to the other forms, while it is decent in power, it doesn't cut it that much, and its Electric/Flying type makes its Ability very redundant, it keeps Levitate for all of its forms, so I don't know why have both the Flying-type and have Levitate for the Ability when one of them already gives it an immunity to Ground-type moves. Base Rotom isn't as strong as the other forms, it has 10 less Special Attack and it is less defensive, but it does have 5 points more Speed, it can be decent, but it is outclassed by its other forms, but I would say that base Rotom is better than Fan Rotom.
In Double Battles, Heat Rotom is used more, and there are some moves it can put to use in Double Battles, like Electroweb, Ally Switch, and Protect, and Wash Rotom does see some good amount of use in Double Battles as well, as with the other forms, they don't get that much use.
The difference in Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl is that Rotom does not learn Electroweb in that game, because for some reason when you transfer a Pokémon over to Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, they have their level up moves at that level instead of the moves they currently have, for example, Rotom cannot have Foul Play, Electroweb, Electric Terrain, and Ally Switch in Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl.
To get the Rotom Catalog in Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, you need to have fought Rotom in the Old Chateau in the aftergame, then enter the Galactic Building in Eterna City and use the Secret Key to access the room, and interact with the appliances to add them to your Rotom Catalog.
