Every Wild Area Event we get lately tends to have three Pokémon instead of six like it used to, and the theme for this event is Water-type Pokémon, it will be from July 1st till July 10th. The following Water-type Pokémon that can be encountered in the Max Raid Battles during this event are Marill, Poliwag, and Spheal, and if you are wondering, even in the 5 Star Max Raid Battles they appear, and there is a very rare chance you can find a Shiny Marill in the Max Raid Battles.
I remember there was an event where you can get a Shiny Azumarill in the Max Raid Battles, but for this event, you can get Shiny Marill, and I have always found it unusual how Shiny Marill is green, and Shiny Azumarill is yellow.
I might as well go over the Pokémon, and starting things off is Marill, as there is a 2% chance of finding a Shiny Marill in the Max Raid Battles, and this one does not have a good Hidden Ability, it gets Sap Sipper, so tough luck for anyone that somehow got a Shiny Marill with Sap Sipper, I really hope they introduce an item that changes the Hidden Ability to a regular Ability to help those that got a Shiny Pokémon with a very bad Hidden Ability. Marill is one of those Pokémon that prefers having its regular Ability, in this case, it gets Huge Power, its evolved form Azumarill is a top tier attacker, or at least was back in X & Y, its main set is Belly Drum and Aqua Jet, and it would use a Sitrus Berry to heal after using Belly Drum, its main Fairy-type move is Play Rough, and for a coverage option, Azumarill can use Superpower or Ice Punch, some Azumarill sets use a Choice Band and have Liquidation for the Water-type move, while Aqua Jet is usually for priority.
Next up is Poliwag, its Hidden Ability is Swift Swim, this turns into Drizzle when it is fully evolved into Politoed, it keeps Swift Swim as a Poliwrath. Going over both of its forms, Poliwrath is a solid Water/Fighting-type with Swift Swim, but it faces competition with many other Pokémon, it does learn some nice moves like Liquidation, Close Combat, Earthquake, Poison Jab, Darkest Lariat, and many other moves. As with Politoed, it does get some nice moves like Scald, Encore, Perish Song, Whirlpool, Ice Beam, and a few others, and while Drizzle is a nice Ability, most players tend to use Pelipper for their Drizzle user due to having access to Tailwind and Hurricane.
The third one is Spheal, its Hidden Ability is Oblivious, while it is a nice Ability for protecting Spheal from being affected by Taunt or Intimidate, Thick Fat is good for taking Fire and Ice-type moves, and Ice Body on its final evolved form Walrein did give it the nickname "Stallrein" back in Gen 4 back when Snow Warning from Abomasnow used to create permanent Hail, and Walrein would have Toxic, Protect, and Substitute to stall out its opponents, which was how it earned the nickname, Surf usually serves as its attacking move. Walrein faces competition with many other Water/Ice-types, like Lapras, which is possibly because Lapras has higher HP, learns a wide variety of moves, and its Gigantamax Form can use G-Max Resonance to set up Aurora Veil for its team, Walrein doesn't have the best coverage, it gets Surf and Ice Beam for its Special Attacks, and that's about it. It can use Swords Dance to go with a Physical Attacking set with moves like Liquidation, Icicle Spear, and Earthquake, but it can be tricky to set up, it's not a bad Pokémon, it is just outclassed by better Pokémon.
