A new Wild Area event is live from February 7th till March 8th, while Milcery will still be in Max Raid Battles until February 16th.
We get some new Max Raid Battles, including the newly added Gigantamax Toxtricity, which will only be available through this event, and some version exclusive Max Raid Battles will be included as well, in Sword, you can fight Kingler and Grimmsnarl, but in Shield, you can take on Orbeetle and Hatterene.
To tie-in with the event, there is a Mystery Gift event where you can earn 3 TRs of High Horsepower, which will be great help against Toxtricity, some Pokémon can learn it through level up, like Golurk, Mudsdale, and Copperajah, so these TRs can be useful for some Ground-types, like Excadrill, Mamoswine, Sandaconda, and Rhyperior, so if you are using any Ground-types, High Horsepower will be good against Toxtricity.
It is time to go over each Gigantamax Pokémon, and starting with the star of the show, Gigantamax Toxtricity. Even though Toxtricity is one of my favourite Pokémon from Gen 8, I do not like the design of its Gigantamax variant, it just doesn't look right. Another thing to note is that in Sword, the Toxtricity will be in its Amped Form, while in Shield, it will be in its Low-Key Form. Toxtricity's Electric-type moves turn into G-Max Stun Shock, which will inflict paralysis or poison on its targets, so this is useful in Double Battles. Toxtricity's Hidden Ability is Technician, which is not even that great, you are better off with Punk Rock, as this is its best Ability, this boosts the power of Toxtricity's sound-based moves, like Boomburst and its signature move Overdrive, and decreases the damage Toxtricity takes from sound-based moves, and because Toxtricity has good Special Attack, it is a good user of a new item called the Throat Spray, which boosts its Special Attack if it uses a sound-based move. Toxtricity's movepool is quite limited, Sludge Wave, Overdrive, and Boomburst are all you will need on it, and the Amped Form can learn Shift Gear, which can make Toxtricity an effective mixed attacker, as it can learn Fire Punch, Drain Punch, Throat Chop, and a few others.
Now onto the version exclusive Gigantamax opponents, and to start things off is Gigantamax Kingler, its Water-type moves become G-Max Foam Burst, which will harshly lower the Speed of its foes. Kingler's Hidden Ability is Sheer Force, which goes well with moves like Liquidation and Rock Slide, and it has a good Physical movepool of Superpower, High Horsepower, X-Scissor, Knock Off, and a few others. Kingler is unfortunately not too great competitively, the best it can ever do is use Agility and attempt to sweep its opponents, but there are better Physical Water-types out there, like Gyarados, Barraskewda, Dracovish, and a few others.
Next is Grimmsnarl, its Dark-type moves become G-Max Snooze, which inflicts the effects of Yawn onto the target, and its Hidden Ability is Pickpocket, but when using Grimmsnarl, you should always go for Prankster, as Grimmsnarl can use moves like Light Screen, Reflect, Thunder Wave, Bulk Up, Swagger, Trick, and many others. Grimmsnarl has a good Attack stat, so it can use moves like Darkest Lariat, Play Rough, Superpower, Leech Life, and the Elemental Punches, and it has two signature moves for each stage, False Surrender is a move it can learn as a Morgrem, and Spirit Break is Grimmsnarl's signature move. You can start by using Bulk Up, and then you can Gigantamax, so that way Grimmsnarl can get in some good damage.
Moving onto the Shield exclusives, and first up is Orbeetle, its Psychic-type moves become G-Max Gravitas, which changes the gravity for five turns, unfortunately for Orbeetle, that will only benefit Hypnosis, as Orbeetle doesn't get many moves with less than 100% Accuracy, so I guess it's helpful in Double Battles for any partners that rely on low Accuracy moves like Blizzard, Fire Blast, and Focus Blast. Orbeetle's best strategy is to use Sticky Web, it can set up screens, and its high Defense makes it a good user of Body Press. Orbeetle's Hidden Ability is Telepathy, which is very helpful in Double Battles, as it allows Orbeetle to not be effected by a teammate's Surf or Earthquake.
The other Shield exclusive is Gigantamax Hatterene, its Fairy-type moves turn into G-Max Smite, which will confuse the target. Hatterene is a destructive force in Trick Room teams, it has massive Special Attack, and can deal some great damage with Max Mindstorm and G-Max Smite, and this is a popular Pokémon in Double Battles, specially in Trick Room teams. Hatterene's Hidden Ability is Magic Bounce, which is the Ability you will want when using it, as it bounces back the target's status moves, like Toxic and Thunder Wave. Mystical Fire is a good coverage move on Hatterene, as it allows it to take on Steel-types, outside of Trick Room, Hatterene is tricky to use with that low Speed, so it will take some support to get the best use of it.
