For the first time in a long while things are starting to look better. I managed to take out several military fleets of the Spanish navy, which eventually also gave me the opportunity to conquer a city for the Dutch. Unfortunately not the city I had to invade for the governor's mission, as that one had two Spanish convoys docked there the moment Spain became too weak. I s'pose you can't have all after all.
Now I've got that city added to the Dutch empire, things will become easier in the future. It'll take only one other city to "switch sides" before the area between the main land of Mexico and Cuba isn't under Spanish control anymore, making it in turn easier for me to set out more of my trading convoys. Which also means I will end up with a positive balance again, as my amount of cash really starts to deplete at this point. But overall, things are looking better, even with the two armed traders out, so I'm not too much worried. For now, anyway.
