Portal had a revelatory lie that was not just a fun meme, it spoke a deeper truth about both games and our society at large. This video examines how game designers often deceive us as players to help us see deeper truths, whether within the game or outside of it. It examines the philosophy of designers like Jonathan Blow who advocate pursuing the truth, versus those who suggest lies are an inherent part of designing games. What we find though,is that games themselves are part of a broader technoscientific artifice, society itself, one where lies are peddled even more frequently, but are even harder to discern. Perhaps games have something to say about that though.
