Rethinking Space in Game Design | Manifold Garden and Designing Spectacular Spaces
Video Games are a spatial medium, both in the its physical construction as well as in our experience of it. In this video, we survey the evolution of space in games, from 2d to 3d to more exotic forms of geometry, and how this has impacted game design. From Donkey Kong to Manifold Garden by way of Portal, we find that space has not only evolved in its physical properties, but also in the design of our experience of it. By turning to art forms versed in the design of space, namely interior design, architecture and mother nature itself, Game designers have transformed not just the shape of space, but also the meaning that it encodes.
