Layman Abstract
In the U.S., the death rate from cancer has been steadily decreasing over the past 20 years, and the number of new cancer diagnoses has been dropping by about 2% each year in men, while staying steady in women. Despite spending large amounts of money on finding cancer treatments, progress has been limited. Cancer is believed to start from permanent genetic changes, which are part of both normal and abnormal biological processes. However, it is uncertain whether we can fully control these complex biological changes to cure cancer.
Rather than focusing solely on finding a cure, it may be more practical and cost-effective to focus on preventing cancer. This could involve reducing harmful pollutants in our environment, like those in the air, water, and food, that are known to contribute to cancer development. More research should be directed toward preventing cancer from starting in the first place, rather than trying to cure it after it develops.
