Full gameplay longplay / playthrough / walkthrough / trueplay of the European nes version of Super Contra / Super C / Contra II on one credit, skip attract mode by starting at (02:12). For those of you who don't know, the game was heavily altered for the German market due to it's strict laws at the time and the fact that Germany had the biggest games market at this point in time. However, Konami decided not to release a different skew of the game in the rest of Europe, so all European countries got this altered version.
It ends up being a strange sort of spot the difference version of Contra these days. With the Human looking characters being swapped for robots. Amusingly the arcade release wasn't altered in Europe, so everyone at the time knew Probotector was Contra with altered sprites and leaving most of us wondering why, they did this.
Probotector II is a port of the second arcade game Super Contra. Cleverly rather than just porting a cut down version of the arcade board, Konami have in affect remixed the game for the NES. Adding in all new stages and remixing the existing one from the arcade. The top down stages from the arcade are largely the only two stages that remain, pretty much the same on NES.
The opening stage has been shorten and the helicopter is the only boss on the stage now and it ends as soon as you finish it unlike the arcade which requires you also destroy a base. Stage 2 is pretty much the same apart from some graphic changes. Stage 3, has a new section added in at the end and now has two new bosses, the arcade boss from this stage is now moved to stage 7 as its boss. Stage 4 is a totally new stage, as is stage 5, however the end boss of stage 5 was a mini boss from stage 4 of the arcade. Stage 6 on NES is the arcades fifth and final stage. It also mean that Gava the end boss of the arcade game and Contra 3 is demoted in this version. Stage 7 is an all new stage and as mentioned above uses a redesign version of the boss from stage 3 of the arcade. Stage 8 on NES is a heavily extended version of stage 4 of the arcade, minus the winged metal alien boss instead replaced by a female bug creatures that later appeared again in Contra 3.
Making it very much a different game to the arcade and one well worth playing. Konami were the kings of run and guns when they made this and Super Contra builds on the success and format of the first game. Improved graphics, gameplay and sound, making impressive use of the system with massive enemies to battle. It's slightly easier than the first title and despite Riven our editor only picking it up recently, he was able to finish it after only a few practice runs, granted he has previous done the arcade version on one credit. That said these earlier games in the series are surprisingly easier than many people may remember, only the later games really rocked up the difficulty. Original NES capture, using composite the best video output an unmodified NES can output.
From the 35 minute mark you can see and hear a brief look at the music / sound test included in the game. It can be accessed by holding down both A and B buttons on the title screen and then pressing Start.
