Project Overkill - PS1 - Security Outpost - (1996) - 100% Kills - PlayStation - Retro Nostalgia
Today I played Project Overkill for the Sony PlayStation. Release Date: 1996
This is a playthrough of the first mission "Security Outpost" on normal difficulty. I didn't plan it but I also got 100% kills which gives you a termination efficiency health bonus.
PO was one of the first PS1 games I bought when I was younger. Probably too young considering the amount of gore and violence in the game but I thought it was pretty badass.
Project Overkill is a shoot 'em up game for the PlayStation, developed and published by Konami in 1996. The plot of the game revolves around a group of four mercenaries hired to eliminate a group of humans called the Viscerians.
In my opinion this game is pretty difficult. If one of your 4 agents dies in a mission they are gone forever and you can get killed from off screen in seconds if you aren't careful. I know big beefy melee enemies come into play soon that used to always promptly end my game.
Mission 1 is a cakewalk compared to what comes after. There is a cool system where you can choose the next mission by going down alternate paths on the world map.
You can play as 4 characters, and they are interchangeable between missions. I honestly don't know if they play super different since I always pick the big green guy but I think they start with unique loadouts. I wouldn't be surprised if they had varying move speed and melee strength as well. Feel free to let me know :)
Gameplay is jank but satisfying. It's got an isometric view and you aim in different directions by pressing the corresponding X,O square and triangle buttons. There isn't any crosshair or even auto aim really so it's so hard to conserve ammo, you just kind of have to spray everything and ask questions later. I just wish the view was zoomed out a little bit.
Sound effects, music and graphics are all well done. The gore is rad, even splattering on walls and leaving bloody footprints. The walls sometimes get in the way of enemies and items so I would recommend checking the perimeter of every new room. The music sets a nice spooky sci-fi mood, I even turned it up a bit in the options :D
I usually edit out load screens in PS1 game footage but these are pretty cool looking and don't take very long so I left them in.
Do you have any memories of this game? Please share in the comments below, I love reading that stuff.
Thanks for watching!
