Today I attempted the Baja 1000 endurance race in Super Off Road: The Baja for the Super Nintendo. Release Date: 1993

I had this for the SNES when I was a kid, though I don't remember playing it much. I think I appreciate it a lot more after playing it now.

I went for the full Baja 1000 mode, just to see if I could even finish it. I know I was never able to as a wee lad. Its a balancing game between staying in first and not wrecking your truck, and it ramps up in difficulty a lot as you go. The second your damage meter hits full on any of the legs of the race it's game over.

There are ATV riders, wild animals, pedestrians and all manner of things to collide with on the track, and for some reason these only seem to effect your truck, not the opponents. Trees are the worst I encountered for truck damage. Avoid at all costs.

The frame rate feels crazy low so handling is pretty tricky at times, especially when you go over a hill at high speed or are trying to avoid the suicidal ATV riders.

If you made it to the end you might have noticed that I completely biffed it 5 seconds from the end of the BAJA 1000 by wrecking my truck. Trust me I screamed in agony when It happened, I honestly thought I was gonna win lol. I do have the password though if I want to do the last couple races again and get my revenge.

Special shout out to Ironman Ivan Stewart, who is the guy on the title screen and drives the red truck in this video. The guy is a monster, It was a constant struggle to even stay ahead of him for one second.

I'd also like to say how cool I think the graphics are. It's pixelated but for SNES its pretty impressive. I think its rad that you start off the first leg of the race in the morning and by the final one you are racing in the dark with headlights on.

If you can get over the frame rate and controls this game is really fun and challenging. Give it a try if you are into old racing games for sure.
