Project Wingman VR Test - Oculus Quest 2 - RTX 3080 LHR
Naturally, since I got my 3080, I've been wanting to see how well it runs with everything. Project Wingman was the first game I wanted to try out.
Previously, on the RTX 2060 SUPER, running a base Quest 2 resolution of 3616x1840, game res scale 100%, and all graphic options set to 1 with shadows at 2, I toggled heavily between 72 and 36 fps.
On the 3080, the res scale is now 120% (I guess that means I'm rendering at 2160p now), with all options set to 2 with Shadows set to 3. I usually get 72fps. Which is better, especially with the increased options.
This OBS recording isn't exactly representative of its actual framerate - but I'm running everything stock, no overclocking. So the framerate is a bit less than it could be, and my machine struggles a little trying to also capture the OBS recording. On top of that, Oculu sLink much prefers trying as hard as it can to VSync, so it decides on either 72fps or 36fps. A VR headset with a direct feed to the video card might allow the mid-range framerates better (I've never used one). With a beefier rig, the results, I'm sure, would be better.
It's a bit frustrating, since I saw a beefier rig with a 3090, everything overclocked, scoring 60+ fps with all game settings set to the max (except resolution which was 2160p with 100% res scaling). My machine can't come close to that when I max the settings. It drops into the 33fps range and pretty much stays there. I find that odd, because even overclocked the 3090 shouldn't get better than 20% over the 3080 in practical use (unless it's doing video editing or 3D production). Adding faster memory and an overclocked GPU might score another 20%, but that still doesn't amount to the 100-120% better performance that I saw.
Aside from that, look at the power draw on the 3080, even when the frame rate is struggling. Yikes.
I also had to run the Steam VR version to get the MSI Afterburner overlay working. The Oculus VR version for whatever reason wouldn't show the overlay's display.
I would be very curious to see how this runs on a direct to video card hookup, like on the HP Reverb G2.
Running on a i7-8700, 16GB 2666, RTX 3080 LHR, EVGA G3 850W PSU, Quest 2 72 Hz, Oculus Link.
