Here is a comparison video between Myst VR standalone on the Quest 2, and the Oculus PCVR version, also played through the Quest 2 with Oculus Link. I have Oculus Link running at 5408x2736 res 90Hz for the PCVR portion of this video.

This video will only matter for those that only have the Quest 2 version and are wondering if the PCVR version is worth playing. For the Quest 2 you'll need an Oculus Link cable to play from your PC, or the Air Link option and a decent router with Wifi 6 (at least I think so - I haven't tried that option yet). If you own Myst VR for Quest 2, the PCVR version in the Oculus store is free. There is also a Steam version of Myst VR - best I know, it's the same as the Oculus version, but it isn't free if you own the Quest 2 version.

In the PCVR version, I only try Epic detail, since I want to see what my RTX 3080 can handle.

The PCVR version is worlds more detailed than the Quest 2. It might not be entirely apparent here, but it's certainly visible in the headset. The textures are bumpmapped, so the buildings don't look like smooth toys like they do in the Quest 2 standalone version. The tree bark is well textured (I forgot to closely inspect the tree bark here, sorry - it does really look MUCH better in PCVR), the tree branches have more detailed foliage, there is grass, all of the surfaces are more textured, the sunlight has a glow effect to it, the sea water is more varied, and there are birds and butterflies. If I had to rate how satisfying the detail is on a scale of 1 to 10, I'd call the Quest 2 detail a 3/10, and the PCVR version a 7/10. It didn't wow me, but I'd certainly rather play it with the better detail. It looks good in this video, but in the headset, there is a certain lack of detail that is apparent.

Yesterday when I tried this, the PCVR version was able to hold a 90fps a lot of the time. It didn't seem to be able to this time. No big deal - because even when it could hold 90fps it would still sometimes drop to 45fps the way this video shows. If I can find a good base res to run at and keep 90fps with my RTX 3080, I'll post it here. As I stood at the shore looking towards the pillars and trees, the framerate would just drop to 45 for a while then go up to 90 fps for a while, when I was just standing there looking. I have no explanation for this.

The best view is at max res with DLSS off. When I turned DLSS on, the pillar details got a little pixelated, and the framerate was helped a little. When I turned the res scale down to 33%, everything looked VERY blurry in the headset - and the strangest part was that it had almost NO impact at all on the framerate. That really confused me. That should have skyrocketed the framerate. So I have no idea what's happening there. Again, this is the Oculus PCVR version, so maybe the Steam PCVR version will behave differently.

The PCVR Graphics menu showed a res of 1920x1080, which is the resolution of my monitor. In Oculus, I have the Quest 2 set at 5708x2736 for this video. The Graphics menu didn't recognize that at all. Neither does Project Wingman, when I run it in Oculus mode - it also shows my base res as 1920x1080. But the high res I set in the Oculus app does properly apply to both apps, so I just ignore that information.

The lowest headroom I got at 45fps was at max around -30% at the shoreline looking at the pillars and the trees, so a starting 4704x2384 res (sqrt(2736*2736/1.3), math) should give me a much more solid 90fps with DLSS off, at least in the first world. I haven't ventured to the later worlds, yet. Update: The 2384p setting proves out. I can probably set the starting res just a little higher, but 2384p looks fine. The app started me at 80% res - I turned it up to 100% to make full use of it.

Run on a i7-8700, 16GB 2666, RTX 3080 LHR, Quest 2, 5408x2736@90Hz, Oculus Link, official cable, 2Gbps connection
