IL-2 VR Test - Oculus Quest 2 - RTX 3080 LHR
Actual mission starts at 1:05 - sorry again.
This is Ice Ring Mission #1. It gives me mostly 72 fps at 1840p on the RTX 3080. But I wanted to record Mission #9, the one where we attack the AA at an airfield. But that one was steadily 36 fps throughout. That was really disappointing. Even setting lower detail to help the framerate, at the airfield before taking off in Mission 9, the frame rate was 36 fps with plane textures popping in and out.
I have my graphic settings set on the low side to encourage more framerate. But that 36 Hz with a RTX 3080 shocked me. I really want IL-2 to run well. I know it uses OpenVR instead of OpenXR as its VR interface API. In my own coding experience so far, OpenXR can do on a RTX 3070 what OpenVR can do on a RTX 3080. For me, so far, OpenXR is faster (or OpenVR induces a pause that consumes frame rate time in some of its routines). Hopefully they think about upgrading to OpenXR for IL-2 VR.
I may try this a few more times, but if I keep getting only 36 fps on my RTX on this game, I'll just keep being disappointed.
I tried again setting my Quest 2 to 90Hz, and in Mission #9 I did get a steady 45 fps most of the time. Not completely horrible, but during the attack on the airfield, it sometimes dipped to 30 fps - there was dogfighting going on above, too - I don't know if that contributed. This makes me wonder if there is something I'm doing horribly wrong. Other videos suggest the game is heavily CPU dependent, so the 3080 will only have so much of an opportunity to render. If that's so, I can live with that.
I wish I would have taken all of these benchmarks with my RTX 2060 SUPER. I have no doubt that the 3080 is rendering faster (its benchmarks are 2x as fast as the RTX SUPER) - I just really want to see a real comparison now, because I don't remember the RTX 2060 SUPER dipping so low to be noticeable - maybe it did and the 3080 has already spoiled me. I just don't see any VR comparison benchmarks in games with different video cards - just OC'd 3090 systems showing off amazing framerates.
