The Sony PlayStation 4 2.01 update is now live, apparently fixing the ‘rest mode’ bug, where consoles couldn’t be turned back on after entering that mode. So, since 2.01 is an optional update, you may not have gotten it automatically – if you did update to 2.0 on your PlayStation 4, make sure to boot in safe mode to avoid encountering the rest mode bug, and then perhaps update 2.01 just to be safe.

Sony did respond to reports of the rest mode bug pretty damn quickly, saying:

“We are aware of issues reported by some PS4 users following the release of PS4’s latest system software update, v2.00. We are investigating these issues and will provide an update as soon as we have more information.”

And, yup, they’ve already fixed it. 2.0, and thus also 2.01, have actually added a handful of new features to the console, too.

Share Play is a new feature that allows players to share their game over the internet, functioning the same way it would if you were playing in the same room. Pressing the share button now leads you to the ‘Share Play’ option, and then you select a friend to add to your share play party. Once they’ve received and accepted your invitation, they’ll jump to watching a live steam of whatever the host is playing. At any point, though, the host can choose to ‘give controller to guest’ and this will basically swap things around – the guest will play the game, the host will watch the stream. You can do the same with co-op, even if the guest doesn’t own the game at all, just by streaming it from the host’s console.

I think it’s a really sweet idea, but it does require both PS Plus (for the host) and a pretty solid internet connection. That said, there is a 60 minute time limit on Share Play, and while all games are currently available with publishers not even having the option to opt-out, they can censor certain footage.

Apparently all of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare has been censored on Share Play, making it unviewable to a guest entirely. The ‘censor’ function is supposed to allow publishers to censor spoilers from the guest, but Activision seems to have applied it to the entire game, like the whole thing is a spoiler. So while Sony guaranteed all games would be available on Share Play, Activision seem to have found a way around this pretty quickly.
