DerpTrolling are a hacker group started in 2011 who have used Twitter to organise various DDoS attacks on major websites, including PayPal and Visa. Apparently they aim to attack major companies that they perceive as being money hungry, and they’ve recently struck again. Or, at least, they claim to have – it could all be a lie, and I do question the credibility of “DerpTrolling”.

So, DerpTrolling – which, again, is the actual name for an actual group of people, who for whatever reason, actually decided to call themselves that – have claimed responsibility for attacking Blizzard’s servers on the weekend, and apparently leaked a document containing thousands of customer logins from the PlayStation Network, 2K Games and Windows Live.

The link to the document has since been removed from DerpTrolling’s Twitter account, where it was originally posted, and apparently the document itself is no longer available. Cnet reported that it contained passwords for 2,131 PSN users; 1,473 Windows Live users; and 2,000 2K Games users. It also said:

“Dear Internet. The following is a very small portion of Lord Gaben and the rest of his crew's glorious raids across the high seas of the Internet.”

I can’t believe this is the fourth time I have to say this in a short period of time, but, “DerpTrolling” have apparently gone against an original statement where they said they didn’t want to leak customer data, but have decided to because they believe their other efforts aren’t being taken seriously. That… that doesn’t really… make sense to me, but, I mean, who am I to argue with ‘Derp Trolling’. Like, ‘hey, these companies aren’t taking our attacks seriously, so let’s attack their customers, YEAH! SCREW THOSE CUSTOMERS!’

Regarding this, they said:

“We were advised by one of our friends over at RedHack to make adjustments in our operations… DerpTrolling in no way wants to harm our children by leaking such damaging data. It's only a warning to the companies.”

So, their apparent reasoning there is supposed to be that leaking this kind of information will force companies to upgrade their security, ultimately resulting in improved customer service. Or something. But they probably wouldn’t need the improved security if it weren’t for all these trolls within the games community hacking these companies - I don’t think any of the hacks on PSN have been for any reason other than to try to convince them to improve their security. They did also say that they had access to over 500,000 users’ credit card data, but didn’t intend to leak that information.

Either way, it’s possible that the pastebin document they initially posted is a fake, with Sony claiming that there was no intrusion on PSN at all. Sony said:

“We have investigated the claims that our network was breached and have found no evidence that there was any intrusion into our network. Unfortunately, Internet fraud including phishing and password matching are realities that consumers and online networks face on a regular basis. We take these reports very seriously and will continue to monitor our network closely.”

So, either, they did such a good job that nobody knows they were there, or it was all faked to begin with. I’ll keep you updated on any new information.
