The Advertising Standards Authority, or ASA, has started to take paid promotions on YouTube more seriously, which obviously affects a lot of gamers. I mean, after all, Pewdiepie is still the most popular channel on YouTube, and it’s dedicated to gaming.

Matt Wilson, a spokesperson from the ASA, said that while they’re aware of disquiet regarding paid YouTube promotions in gaming circles, they cannot reasonably address general ‘disquiet’ over official advertising complaints. He said:

“Obviously we have to manage our resources and look into adverts that people are complaining about. There are millions of adverts published each year and we need to be on-hands in dealing with the ones people are complaining about. But if a complaint came in, we would absolutely look into it and see of there are grounds for further investigation. We encourage people to contact us if they are concerned about a specific games company.”

So, maybe if more people were making official complaints regarding YouTubers being paid to cover things positively, we may be able to force them to be more upfront about when things are promotions, as opposed to being genuine. On Wednesday, the ASA did actually block videos from five YouTubers who advertised Oreos, and they may start taking YouTubers and video bloggers just as seriously as advertisements on TV, for example.

In January, a Microsoft deal with Machinima was revealed, where Microsoft was basically paying people partnered to the network to give positive coverage of the Xbox One. Something similar happened with EA’s Battlefield 4, and with Warner Bros.’ Shadow of Mordor.

Now, I personally have a YouTube channel that’s dedicated to gaming content, but have never had anyone ask me for promotion because I’m not partnered. When you partner a YouTube channel, you are essentially becoming part of an advertising network, where your partner company will ask you to do promotions in exchange for more money, and this is the easiest way to make a profit off of YouTube. That right there is why I’m not a part of one and don’t want to be, ever, but even the smallest YouTubers are.
